Jindal Steel and Power (JSP), Angul, celebrated World Environment Day 2025 with a vibrant array of activities focused on the global theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution.” The event brought together employees, their families, local residents, and environmental advocates to reaffirm their collective commitment to sustainability and the reduction of plastic waste.

The day began on an energetic note with a “Run for Environment” mini-marathon, flagged off by Atul Dubey, President – Steel & Utilities, symbolizing the spirit of environmental activism in motion. Participants from various walks of life came together in unity and purpose. Following the marathon, over 500 saplings were planted across the premises, reinforcing JSP’s vision of a greener, healthier ecosystem.

Prominent personalities graced the occasion, including Dr. Prafula Kumar Behera, Scientist from the State Pollution Control Board, Atul Dubey, Dilip Sinha, CHRO of JSP, Yoga Guru Swami Satyabindu Saraswati, and departmental heads. Their presence and active participation underscored the significance of collaborative efforts in environmental conservation.

In a powerful message shared on social media, JSP Chairman and three-time Member of Parliament from Kurukshetra, Naveen Jindal, emphasized the urgency of addressing plastic pollution. “The effects of plastic pollution are far-reaching. It significantly impacts our environment and adds to our carbon footprint through its production and disposal. By cutting down on single-use plastics, choosing reusable options, and encouraging sustainable alternatives, we can all make a meaningful difference,” he stated.

Highlighting the importance of compliance and environmental responsibility, Dr. Behera elaborated on the origins and objectives of World Environment Day. He stressed the need for strict adherence to environmental laws to ensure long-term sustainability. Dubey, meanwhile, called on all citizens to adopt environmentally conscious lifestyles, pledging personal and organizational commitment to protect the planet for future generations.

The day’s celebrations also fostered environmental awareness among the younger generation through a Children’s Drawing Competition, which invited students from Class 1 to 12 to illustrate their vision of a cleaner Earth. In parallel, the Ladies’ Essay and Quiz Competition provided a platform for employees’ spouses to reflect on pressing environmental issues, enhancing community dialogue and inclusion.

The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, applauding the creative and thoughtful contributions of all participants. Their efforts not only highlighted the depth of community engagement but also served as inspiration for others to take action.

Beyond the township celebrations, JSP marked the day with the inauguration of a new Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and a special plantation drive at the Utkal-C Mines area, further demonstrating the company’s integrated approach to environmental management.

Adding another dimension to the observance, the Jindal Foundation — JSP’s social responsibility arm — conducted a World Environment Day programme at the Jamunali Farmer’s Field School. The initiative engaged 40 natural farmers in activities such as a mass plantation drive, seed distribution, and an environmental oath-taking ceremony. Local leaders, including the village president, secretary, sarpanch, and prominent farmers, participated actively, highlighting the vital role of rural communities in environmental stewardship.

With its multifaceted approach to awareness, action, and inclusion, JSP Angul’s World Environment Day celebration stood as a powerful reminder that meaningful change begins with individual resolve and collective responsibility.
