Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has launched a wide range of summer relief initiatives aimed at mitigating heat stress and ensuring reliable access to safe drinking water in rural communities surrounding its operations in Odisha. The company has also introduced several measures to support the health and wellbeing of its employees working at its manufacturing and mining sites, underscoring its commitment to holistic and inclusive development.

In Jharsuguda, Vedanta Aluminium rolled out a robust heat mitigation plan in collaboration with the district administration. As part of this initiative, drinking water is being delivered regularly through water tankers to residents in 17 municipal wards. Additionally, 11 nearby villages — including Katikela, Dalki, Purna, and Brundamal — are being supported to ensure uninterrupted access to clean drinking water, even in remote areas.

To further enhance accessibility, the company has installed multiple public drinking water kiosks under its Jal Seva Shibir initiative. Located at high-footfall areas across Jharsuguda and within the company’s premises, these kiosks offer clean, chilled water throughout the day. Two rest sheds equipped with coolers, drinking water, and comfortable seating have also been established at Badmal and Panchpada, providing respite especially for commuters and the elderly.

In addition, Vedanta’s Mines team has initiated a large-scale water relief effort across the Sundargarh and Jharsuguda districts. Through this community-centric programme, more than 10,000 people across villages such as Kuraloi, Piplimal, Luabahal, Garjanjore, Chakra, and Bileimunda are being served with clean drinking water daily via dedicated water tankers.

To build long-term resilience, the company has recently installed 11 solar-powered borewells, 50 bio-toilets, and 20 water purifiers across 12 villages in the Hemgir and Kuraloi regions, ensuring sustainable water access and improved hygiene for local communities.

Commenting on the initiative, Sunil Gupta, COO – Vedanta Aluminium, said: “Extreme heat poses serious challenges, especially in rural areas. Our summer relief efforts, implemented in partnership with district authorities, aim to safeguard the health and comfort of our communities. We are committed to making a lasting impact through both our operations and social initiatives.”

Vedanta Aluminium continues to empower communities through programs in education, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods, infrastructure development, and grassroots sports and culture. These efforts reflect the company’s broader commitment to fostering inclusive growth and socio-economic progress in Odisha. By working closely with local authorities and stakeholders, Vedanta ensures that its interventions are impactful and sustainable.

A business of Vedanta Limited, Vedanta Aluminium produced 2.42 million tonnes of aluminium in FY25, accounting for over half of India’s total output. The company is a leader in value-added aluminium products used in critical sectors and ranks 2nd globally in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2024 for the aluminium industry — a testament to its world-class ESG performance.
