In a transformative initiative to bolster women’s entrepreneurship in one of Odisha’s most underserved regions, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has extended critical support to women-led self-help groups (SHGs) in Gunpur village of Kalahandi district.
As part of its ongoing commitment to inclusive and sustainable development, the company has provided essential machinery for chappal (slipper) making, paper plate manufacturing, and rice milling to local SHGs. The initiative aims to catalyze microenterprise growth, drive household income, and equip rural women with the means to achieve long-term financial independence.
Complementing the infrastructure support, Vedanta also organized a dedicated workshop for 45 women from three SHGs, focused on fostering financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills. The training included sessions on income generation strategies, marketing techniques, and business management, led by subject-matter experts. Participants gained both practical knowledge and the confidence necessary to manage and grow their enterprises sustainably.
Speaking on the impact of the initiative, Kalendiri Dhangada Majhi, Secretary of the Maa Lankeswari SHG, shared, “We are grateful for Vedanta’s unwavering support. With access to both the necessary tools and vital business training, we feel empowered to run our own ventures and secure a better future for our families.”
Sunil Gupta, Chief Operating Officer of Vedanta Aluminium, highlighted the broader vision behind the initiative, saying “We are steadfast in our commitment to empowering women to realize their full potential. In regions where survival once led to unimaginable sacrifices, women are now becoming financially independent leaders and role models. Our initiatives in Kalahandi and across Odisha are aimed at building inclusive communities and promoting gender equality.”
Kalahandi, historically known for its socio-economic challenges, is today witnessing a quiet transformation, thanks to comprehensive community development programs driven by Vedanta’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. Projects such as Project Panchhi and Project Shree Shakti continue to uplift women from rural and marginalized backgrounds by offering education, employment opportunities, and flexible workplace policies tailored to their needs.
With these sustained efforts, Vedanta Aluminium is not just enabling livelihood generation — it is laying the foundation for a more equitable and empowered society.
