NTPC Bongaigaon dedicates state-of-the-art Burn HDU and Eye OT facilities to Kokrajhar Medical College under CSR drive

In a landmark stride towards strengthening the healthcare infrastructure in Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Region, NTPC Bongaigaon has formally dedicated two advanced medical units — a 6-bedded Burn High Dependency Unit (HDU) and a newly renovated Eye Operation Theatre (OT) —t o Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital. These critical facilities have been established under NTPC’s robust Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, reaffirming the company’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.

The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of several dignitaries, underscoring the significance of the occasion. Joyanta Basumatary, Member of Parliament, Kokrajhar, lauded NTPC Bongaigaon’s persistent efforts to uplift healthcare services in the region. “These facilities will provide much-needed relief to the underserved and ensure timely medical intervention, especially for burn injuries and ophthalmic conditions,” he said, emphasizing the crucial role of public sector enterprises in bridging regional healthcare disparities.

Adding to the sentiments, Masanda M. Pertin, District Commissioner of Kokrajhar, described the inauguration as more than just an infrastructural development. “It is a symbol of timely collaboration and corporate responsiveness,” she said, acknowledging NTPC’s unwavering partnership with the district administration in various development endeavors.

Lawrence Islary, MLA, East Kokrajhar, hailed the initiative as a long-awaited fulfillment of a pressing regional need. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the facilities remain accessible and well-maintained to serve those in dire need, particularly the economically disadvantaged.

Representing NTPC Bongaigaon, Arnab Maitra, Business Unit Head, emphasized that the initiative reflects NTPC’s broader mission of empowering lives beyond power generation. “Our CSR focus is rooted in the belief that development must be inclusive. The Burn HDU and Eye OT are emblematic of that belief in action,” he said.

The event was graced by the presence of medical and administrative luminaries including Prof. Dr. Atul Chandra Baro, Principal and Chief Superintendent of Kokrajhar Medical College; Prof. Dr. Bhubaneswar Saikia, Superintendent; Kabita Deka, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kokrajhar; Pratima Brahma, Chairperson of Kokrajhar Municipal Board; Onkar Nath, AGM (HR), NTPC Bongaigaon; and Dr. Deepayan Paul, Chief Medical Officer, NTPC Bongaigaon, among others.

The newly established Burn HDU, developed at an investment of INR 60.49 lakh, is equipped with cutting-edge medical equipment, including ICU beds, cardiac monitors, defibrillators, BI PAP machines, crash carts, syringe pumps, and advanced patient mobility systems. The facility is expected to play a vital role in addressing emergency burn cases, thus reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for specialized care.

The upgraded Eye Operation Theatre, set up at a cost of Rs 9.51 lakh, features enhanced surgical infrastructure such as aluminum paneling, autoclaves, a RO water system, a washing machine, and modern scrub stations. This theatre is projected to conduct over 200 surgeries annually, significantly improving ophthalmological services in the region.

The event concluded with a walkthrough of the newly inaugurated facilities, during which dignitaries engaged with medical staff and community members, underscoring the spirit of collaboration and shared responsibility that powered the project.
