JSW Steel’s mines shine bright with dual honours at Annual Mines Safety Week 2024

JSW Steel’s Odisha mining division stood out with remarkable distinction at the grand finale of the 42nd Annual Mines Safety Week–2024 (AMSWC), clinching two prestigious Overall Performance Awards. The high-profile event was conducted under the aegis of the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), Bhubaneswar Region, on Sunday.

Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to safety and operational excellence, the Ganua Iron Ore Mine was declared the Overall Performance Winner in the B-4 category, recognized for its exemplary adherence to safety protocols and innovative practices. Simultaneously, the Narayanposhi Iron Ore and Manganese Mine secured the Second Prize for Overall Performance in the B-1 category, lauded for its sustained safety performance and best-in-class standards.

The awards were presented to Ram Shankar Sharma, Head of Operations and Projects, and Vijay Kumar, Head of Environment, Health & Safety, alongside their dedicated teams. Key contributors, including Mine Managers Arundeep Bhattacharjee and Shri Tapan Rath, were also honored for their crucial roles in steering the safety-first approach.

Reflecting on the recognition, Sharma said, “We uphold a strong safety culture rooted in adherence to protocols and continuous improvement. Our aim is to prevent accidents and protect every individual working in our operations. We remain steadfast in our zero-harm mission.”

Mines Safety Week is an annual initiative observed across India to foster safe mining practices, lower accident rates, and instill a proactive safety mindset among stakeholders, spearheaded by DGMS.

Earlier in the day, dignitaries and delegates visited a curated display of safety exhibits hosted by top mining entities including Tata Steel, JSW, Jindal Steel & Power, Odisha Mining Corporation, Vedanta, and several vendor partners — showcasing cutting-edge safety innovations and preventive equipment designed to reinforce worker safety across the sector.
