On this day in 1907, a quiet revolution began in the town of Sakchi — one that would shape the industrial destiny of a nation. Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO), now Tata Steel, was founded with the daring vision of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, a dreamer who believed that India could produce steel not just to build structures, but to build a nation.

Today, as Tata Steel celebrates its 119th Foundation Day, it stands as more than a business — it is an enduring symbol of industrial strength, ethical leadership, and inclusive growth.

Jamsetji Tata’s dream of building a steel plant in India was seen as audacious in an era when such an endeavour seemed impossible. But in 1907, TISCO was born in what would become Jamshedpur — a city built on ideals as strong as the steel it produces. His vision laid the foundation not only for a company, but for a new industrial era in India.

Tata Steel’s journey is intertwined with India’s own development story. It pioneered labour welfare and urban planning as early as the 1900s, setting benchmarks long before these were mandated. The Company continues to lead in community development, sustainability, and innovation — standing as a testament to business with purpose.

The philosophy that businesses exist to serve society has always been central to Tata Steel’s ethos. Well before ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ became a global standard, Tata Steel was already investing in the communities around its operations. In FY 2024-25 alone, its CSR initiatives positively impacted 5.77 million lives across India.

In its 118-year journey, Tata Steel has weathered global wars, economic upheavals, and technological shifts. Through every challenge, it has responded with innovation, agility, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. From being India’s first integrated steel plant to becoming one of the world’s leading steelmakers, the Company’s story is one of transformation and tenacity.

Today, Tata Steel operates across geographies with a diversified product portfolio, continuing to drive value for all its stakeholders while staying rooted in its founding values.

The fiscal year 2024-25 marked a turning point, as Tata Steel commissioned India’s largest blast furnace at its Kalinganagar plant and embarked on low-emission steelmaking with new electric arc furnace projects in Ludhiana and Port Talbot. With a goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2045, Tata Steel is actively pursuing decarbonisation through alternative fuels, circular economy models, and investments in renewable energy and digital technologies.

Though born in Jamshedpur, Tata Steel shares a deep, century-old bond with Odisha. What began with mining operations has now grown into a thriving hub of steelmaking. With three major plants, an industrial park, and a ferroalloys business, Odisha is central to Tata Steel’s future. Following the Phase II expansion of Tata Steel Kalinganagar, the Company is set to transform the Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited facility into a 9.5 million tonne per annum steel powerhouse. With cumulative investments exceeding Rs 1,00,000 crore, Odisha now stands as Tata Steel’s largest investment destination in India.

Tata Steel’s next chapter is defined by purpose — to create steel solutions that serve not just markets, but the planet. With a clear direction to lead the green transition in the steel industry, the Company remains committed to shaping a sustainable, inclusive future.

As Tata Steel steps into its 119th year, it continues to carry forward the flame of its founder’s dream — forging steel with soul, and progress with purpose.
