Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the foundation stone of the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP) in Banswara, Rajasthan. Being developed by Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd (ASHVINI), the project will house four indigenous 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), with a total capacity of 2,800 MW. With an estimated investment of ₹42,000 crore, it will emerge as one of the largest nuclear plants in the country, bolstering India’s energy security and advancing its commitment to clean, reliable, and sustainable power.
The ceremony was attended by Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde, Governor of Rajasthan; Bhajan Lal Sharma, Chief Minister of Rajasthan; Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of New & Renewable Energy and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution; Deputy Chief Ministers of Rajasthan; along with senior dignitaries and officials.
The reactors, based on the indigenously designed IPHWR-700 model, feature advanced safety systems and are part of India’s “fleet mode” strategy to build ten identical 700 MW units across the country under standardized design and procurement plans. Three such reactors are already operational, with Mahi Banswara forming a crucial part of this national initiative. This approach strengthens Atmanirbhar Bharat by ensuring cost efficiency, faster project deployment, and consolidated operational expertise.
ASHVINI, a joint venture between NPCIL (51%) and NTPC (49%), brings together the technological, financial, and project management expertise of both organizations to deliver the ambitious project. On completion, MBRAPP will supply clean and affordable electricity to Rajasthan and other beneficiary states, while also generating significant direct and indirect employment opportunities, boosting local economies, and supporting community development.
On the occasion, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the RSDCL Nokh Solar Park (925 MW) at Phalodi, Rajasthan, where NTPC is developing 735 MW of renewable capacity. The solar park will add substantially to India’s green energy footprint by generating large volumes of clean power and reducing millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Besides strengthening India’s clean energy portfolio, the project will create thousands of jobs and contribute to regional as well as national economic growth.
