In a landmark milestone for India’s power transmission sector, the country’s first indigenously manufactured 220kV Mobile Gas-Insulated Switchgear (m-GIS) System was delivered to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) by Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems (India) Private Limited (TTDI).
The launch marks a major step forward in technological innovation, standardization, and indigenization of India’s transmission infrastructure. Designed and built entirely in line with POWERGRID’s operational requirements, the 220kV m-GIS System embodies the “Make in India” vision and the nation’s growing engineering capabilities.
The system was formally flagged off from TTDI’s manufacturing facility in Telangana in the presence of Vamsi Rama Mohan Burra (Director – Projects, POWERGRID), Rajil Srivastava (ED – Asset Management), and Abhay Kumar (CGM I/C – Engineering).
Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) technology is known for its compactness and reliability in high-voltage power distribution, especially in space-constrained environments. Recognizing the need for mobility and rapid response, POWERGRID conceptualized and defined the technical contours of a mobile GIS solution, enabling faster grid restoration and enhanced resilience during emergencies.
Developed and manufactured by TTDI under POWERGRID’s initiative, the m-GIS system ensures rapid deployment, grid flexibility, and disaster-readiness. Meeting POWERGRID’s stringent design, quality, and performance standards, it supports temporary power evacuation, substation augmentation, and emergency restoration with minimal infrastructure and time. Its modular “Connect–Disconnect–Redeploy” configuration ensures exceptional operational agility.
The m-GIS is engineered to fit standard trailer dimensions while maintaining necessary electrical clearances and mechanical integrity during transportation and deployment.
“We are proud to collaborate with POWERGRID in making this milestone possible and to realize an indigenous solution supporting critical applications in India’s EHV grid network. Reinforcing our Make in India commitment, the delivery of the first-of-its-kind Mobile 220kV m-GIS Solution is a remarkable achievement for us,” said Hiroshi Furuta, Chairman and Managing Director, TTDI. “TTDI is at the forefront of offering customized solutions to address unique operational needs. The 220kV m-GIS showcases our competence and strengthens our resolve to continue delivering innovations that enhance India’s power resilience.”
Combining high-voltage reliability with financial efficiency, the m-GIS solution is ideal for utilities, renewable energy projects, and disaster recovery operations, offering a future-ready investment for a more resilient power infrastructure.
Building on this success, TTDI is now developing India’s first indigenous 400kV Mobile GIS System for POWERGRID, scheduled for delivery in August 2026, along with a 132kV m-GIS solution set for delivery in November 2025.
