The Adani Group has announced its foray into the battery energy storage sector with plans to establish a 1,126 MW / 3,530 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda in Gujarat — a landmark initiative that will become India’s largest and among the world’s biggest single-location energy storage projects.
The mega facility, comprising over 700 advanced BESS containers, is slated for commissioning by March 2026. It will form an integral part of the Khavda renewable energy complex, which is already poised to be the world’s largest renewable energy installation.
Designed to strengthen India’s clean energy infrastructure, the BESS project will play a pivotal role in ensuring grid stability, easing peak load pressures, and facilitating round-the-clock renewable power supply. By storing up to 3,530 MWh of energy, the system will be capable of extending a power capacity of 1,126 MW for approximately three hours — addressing one of the key challenges in renewable energy integration.
“Energy storage is the cornerstone of a renewable-powered future,” said Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group. “With this historic project, we are not only setting global benchmarks but also reinforcing our commitment to India’s energy independence and sustainability. This initiative enables us to deliver reliable, clean, and affordable energy solutions at scale.”
The company said the project will employ cutting-edge lithium-ion battery technology, seamlessly integrated with advanced energy management systems to maximize efficiency and reliability. Once operational, it will significantly contribute to peak load management, energy shifting, and decarbonisation of the power sector.
Underscoring its long-term vision, the Adani Group announced plans to expand its total storage capacity to 15 GWh by fiscal 2027 and to 50 GWh within five years. This ambitious roadmap highlights the conglomerate’s strategic push toward accelerating India’s transition to a sustainable energy future.
With this milestone, Adani Group joins the league of global energy leaders investing in large-scale battery storage infrastructure — marking a transformative step in India’s journey toward clean, dependable, and self-reliant power generation.
