In a significant push to advance regional sustainability, Aditya Aluminium, a unit of Hindalco Industries, organized a comprehensive two-day Corporate Training Programme on Water Stewardship and Biodiversity in collaboration with the UN Global Compact Network India (UNGCNI). Held from November 18–19 at the company’s Lapanga facility in Sambalpur district, the initiative convened 50 participants representing 22 leading industries and academic institutions across Odisha, including key hubs like Sambalpur and Jharsuguda.
The programme focused on deepening technical and policy understanding around water conservation, water quality enhancement, and the ecological health of riverine systems. It highlighted the indispensable role of riparian biodiversity in building resilient and sustainable river basins, reinforcing the urgency of integrating science-backed conservation strategies into industrial practices.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. S. N. Nanda, Regional Officer of the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB), Sambalpur, joined by distinguished leaders including Ratnesh Jha, Executive Director of UNGCNI; Vaishali Surawar, Chief Sustainability Officer of Hindalco Industries; and Jagannath P. Nayak, Unit Head of Aditya Aluminium. Their presence underscored the collective commitment to strengthening sustainability frameworks across sectors.
Participants included representatives from renowned companies such as Vedanta, TATA, JSW-BPSL, Shyam, Viraj, Ultratech Cement, Hindalco Industries, Oil India Ltd, Usha Martin, and TRL, alongside environmental bodies like IUCN and GCRS. Subject experts in biodiversity conservation, water resource management, and environmental research delivered sessions on water risk assessment, stewardship frameworks, and the application of advanced data analytics for river basin management.
A key feature of the training was a field visit to a degraded land restoration site near Sambalpur, where Hindalco is spearheading ecological regeneration to revive natural balance and native biodiversity. Participants observed sustainable land reclamation, afforestation practices, and Hindalco’s extensive offsite plantation initiatives, offering them an up-close understanding of practical conservation models.
The workshop also delved into innovative water risk mitigation approaches and data-driven strategies to enhance the resilience of the Mahanadi river basin. Attendees gained valuable insights into the region’s environmental vulnerabilities and left equipped with actionable strategies to advance water stewardship and biodiversity protection within their respective organizations.
The event concluded with gratitude extended to all participating organizations, experts, and partners whose collaborative efforts are driving critical progress in safeguarding water resources and strengthening biodiversity across the region.
