Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening public health by marking World Diabetes Day (November 14) and World Toilet Day (November 19) with a series of impactful outreach initiatives across Jharsuguda. The programs, held in schools and villages, brought together students, educators, villagers and healthcare experts to highlight the critical importance of hygiene, sanitization and early disease detection as cornerstones of sustained community wellbeing.
At Government UG High School, Purna, Vedanta conducted interactive sessions for more than 100 students and staff members, transforming hygiene lessons into an engaging learning experience. Demonstrations on correct toilet usage, proper handwashing techniques and effective waste management were combined with a student-led cleanliness activity, fostering practical habits essential for a healthier school environment and encouraging children to champion these practices in their homes and neighbourhoods.
Simultaneously, in Siriapali village, Vedanta’s Mobile Health Unit (MHU) observed World Diabetes Day with a comprehensive awareness and screening camp. The initiative focused on early detection and lifestyle-based risk factors associated with non-communicable diseases. Health professionals from the District Headquarters Hospital and Vedanta’s medical team educated villagers on symptoms, preventive care and long-term diabetes management. More than 60 individuals underwent on-site screening, and among them, 15 were diagnosed with diabetes and immediately provided with a month’s supply of critical medication to initiate timely treatment.
The event saw the participation of Gitanjali Meher from the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Department of the District Headquarters Hospital, who graced the occasion as Chief Guest. She addressed the community on early symptoms, lifestyle risks, the significance of regular screening and the need for a sustained approach to diabetes care. Women entrepreneur and Subhalaxmi Cooperative member Puspanjali Seth also shared her insights, while Dr. Adwitiya Keshari Barik from Vedanta’s MHU team elaborated on the diagnostic and treatment support extended through the mobile health services, urging villagers to proactively seek medical care for better health outcomes.
Highlighting the company’s commitment, C. Chandru, CEO – Vedanta Jharsuguda, said, “Good health and hygiene are fundamental to the wellbeing of our communities. Through these programs, we aim to strengthen awareness, early detection and preventive care where it matters most. Vedanta remains committed to driving meaningful health outcomes in the region.”
Echoing the positive impact of the initiative, Ambika Naik, Headmistress of Government UG High School, Purna, said, “Today’s session helped our students truly understand the importance of hygiene and clean toilet practices.
