Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has achieved a major milestone by successfully scaling operations at its Lanjigarh Refinery to 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), transforming what began as a 2 MTPA greenfield facility into the country’s largest single-location alumina refinery. The expansion marks a decisive step in strengthening India’s self-reliance in aluminium and building a globally competitive domestic value chain.
With this scale-up, Vedanta Lanjigarh now ranks as the world’s second-largest alumina refinery outside China. The expansion lifts India’s total alumina refining capacity to nearly 13 MTPA, positioning the country as the third-largest alumina producer globally. The Lanjigarh facility alone contributes an impressive 38 per cent of India’s total alumina output, underscoring its strategic importance to the nation’s industrial ecosystem.
The milestone comes at a time when domestic demand for aluminium is accelerating across critical sectors such as infrastructure, automotive and electric vehicles, renewable energy, construction, railways and aerospace. By expanding capacity at scale, Vedanta Aluminium is reinforcing supply security for these growth engines while advancing the national vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Operational excellence has accompanied the capacity expansion. In November, the refinery recorded its highest-ever monthly alumina production of 254 kilo tonnes, registering an 8 per cent month-on-month increase and a remarkable 68 per cent year-on-year growth. The record output was achieved through disciplined execution, including handling over 700 rakes — the highest ever in a single month — alongside the lowest specific power consumption in 20 months and conversion costs reduced to an 18-month low through optimized processes and enhanced resource efficiency.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said, “Aluminium is a strategic metal, central to India’s industrial growth and the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Scaling our Lanjigarh operations to 5 MTPA is both a capacity milestone and a step toward a resilient, world-class aluminium value chain. Our ramp-up, evidenced by record monthly outputs, reflects our commitment to responsible resource development, innovation, and long-term value creation for the nation.”
Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya, CEO of Vedanta Alumina Business, described the achievement as a testament to the dedication and engineering excellence of the teams, highlighting the precision, agility and collaboration that guided the expansion from concept to commissioning, while reinforcing the company’s Zero Harm culture.
Beyond industrial growth, Vedanta Aluminium continues to drive inclusive development in and around Lanjigarh through sustained investments in education, healthcare, sports and skill-building initiatives, ensuring that progress for industry goes hand in hand with progress for people.
A business of Vedanta Limited, Vedanta Aluminium manufactures more than half of India’s aluminium output, producing 2.42 million tonnes in FY25. Ranked second globally in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2024 for the aluminium industry, the company continues to advance aluminium as the “Metal of the Future” for a greener tomorrow.
