In a major boost to aviation-led economic growth in the Northeast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA), marking one of India’s fastest airport infrastructure deliveries—from concept to commissioning in under a year.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister described the inauguration as part of a broader Vikas ka Utsav in Assam and the Northeast. Emphasising Assam’s rising strategic importance, he highlighted its role as India’s eastern gateway under the Act East policy. The Prime Minister noted that the bamboo-inspired terminal symbolises strength, sustainability and the region’s cultural contribution to Viksit Bharat.

Developed by Guwahati International Airport Limited and operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, the new terminal — aptly named “The Bamboo Orchids” — blends modern aviation infrastructure with local identity. The terminal showcases indigenous bamboo elements and nature-inspired architecture, reflecting the ethos and heritage of the Northeast while delivering global standards of passenger experience.

Commenting on the milestone, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani said the project demonstrates how world-class airport infrastructure can be delivered with speed and efficiency, while remaining deeply rooted in regional culture and sustainability.

The new terminal significantly strengthens air connectivity in the region and reinforces Guwahati’s position as the Northeast’s primary aviation hub. Equipped with DigiYatra-enabled passenger processing, smart check-in systems and expansive terminal spaces, the airport is designed to handle 13.1 million passengers annually by 2032.

The overall airport development represents an investment of ₹5,000 crore, underscoring Adani Group’s long-term commitment to the region. This includes ₹1,000 crore earmarked for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, along with planned integrated domestic and international cargo infrastructure. These initiatives are expected to boost trade, logistics capabilities and employment generation, catalysing economic growth across Assam and the wider Northeast.
