Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Thursday announced the nationwide launch of its network-side Anti-Spam and Anti-Smishing protection for mobile customers, delivering a “safe, secure, and always connected” experience without requiring any app installation or user intervention. The system, which filters malicious SMS links in real time before delivery, ensures that phishing URLs are blocked at the network edge while legitimate communications such as OTPs, banking alerts, and government notifications continue to flow under TRAI’s DLT/UCC framework.

Previewed at India Mobile Congress 2024, the advanced protection is now being activated across BSNL circles as part of ongoing cutovers. Developed in collaboration with leading India-based cloud communications platform Tanla, the solution leverages a powerful combination of AI/ML, Natural Language Processing, reputation intelligence, and link expansion technology to score and filter messages at line speed. It integrates seamlessly with the blockchain-based DLT stack already in use by Indian telecom operators to combat unsolicited commercial communication.

The underlying technology — recognized for over 99% efficacy against smishing — operates at national scale and connects with major web and messaging platforms to neutralize emerging threats rapidly. On average, the system detects more than 1.5 million scam attempts daily, identifies over 35,000 unique fraudulent links, and flags around 60,000 scam WhatsApp and mobile numbers every month. Powered by four proprietary AI/ML engines, deep learning, and NLP, the system significantly reduces the risk of credential theft and payment fraud for BSNL customers.

The protection is now enabled by default for all BSNL mobile subscribers in live circles, automatically blocking malicious-link SMS before they reach the user’s inbox.
