In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended the Chief Manager (Mining) of Mahanadi Coal Limited (MCL), Basundhara Area, Sundergarh, Odisha, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹20,000.

According to official sources, the case was registered by the CBI on July 9, 2025, following a complaint that the accused had demanded a bribe of ₹30,000 from the complainant. The bribe was reportedly sought to facilitate the release of a compensation fund amounting to ₹11,37,595, which was payable to the complainant’s relative in connection with the acquisition of land.

After negotiation, the accused allegedly agreed to reduce the bribe demand to ₹20,000. Acting swiftly, the CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe amount. The official was immediately taken into custody, and further legal procedures are underway.

A senior CBI official confirmed that the accused individual has been apprehended and that investigation in the case is ongoing to determine the full extent of the misconduct and identify any possible collusion.

The arrest highlights the continued vigilance of central agencies in tackling corruption within public sector undertakings and ensuring transparency in matters involving public compensation and land acquisition.
