Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, underscored the Government of India’s commitment to empowering youth through industry-integrated learning while addressing the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme (PMIS) North-East Roundtable held at the Courtyard by Marriott, Shillong. The high-profile event was also attended by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and senior officials from various public sector undertakings and government bodies.
The roundtable brought together interns from across the North-Eastern states, offering a vibrant platform for them to share personal insights, experiences, and aspirations under PMIS. During the exhibition walkthrough, Sitharaman and Sangma visited the NTPC stall, where interns demonstrated cutting-edge AR/VR modules designed to introduce students to power plant operations. The immersive technology showcased NTPC’s forward-looking approach to practical education and capacity-building.
In her keynote address, Sitharaman emphasised that the PMIS initiative is central to the government’s vision of bridging the gap between academics and industry. “Schemes like PMIS are not just internships; they are transformative journeys that prepare our youth to be globally competitive. We are especially proud of the way PSUs like NTPC are equipping interns with real-world tools and experiences, ensuring India’s young talent is ready for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow,” she remarked.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the North-East in India’s developmental journey, the Finance Minister noted that initiatives like PMIS enable inclusive participation, particularly for first-generation graduates and young women, by providing equal access to professional opportunities.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, in his address, lauded the central government’s efforts and reaffirmed Meghalaya’s commitment to national skill development efforts. He encouraged the youth to leverage opportunities under PMIS to enhance their skills and contribute meaningfully to state and national progress.
The programme also featured an engaging experience-sharing session by interns, a screening of a short film on PMIS, and the felicitation of dignitaries. Jagdish Chelani, Joint Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, delivered the vote of thanks, concluding the event on a celebratory note with high tea.
NTPC’s prominent role in PMIS reflects its unwavering commitment to nurturing future-ready professionals through hands-on learning and technological innovation — a vital step toward realising India’s vision of a dynamic, skilled, and confident workforce.
