From Despair to Determination: How DAV Vedanta International School redefining education in Kalahandi

At the heart of this change stands the DAV Vedanta International School — Kalahandi’s first English-medium institution, a beacon of hope that has reimagined the academic landscape for thousands.

When the school opened its doors in 2006, its mission went far beyond teaching textbooks. It aimed to build bridges between a remote tribal heartland and the wider world. Today, with over 1,300 students — 83% hailing from nearby communities — the school is nurturing a new generation of confident, capable citizens. Many are first-generation learners, stepping into classrooms equipped with smart boards, computer labs, and fully functional science laboratories — facilities that were once unimaginable in this part of the state.

The results speak for themselves. In 2023, DAV Vedanta International School ranked first among all DAV institutions, with Class 12 students achieving an extraordinary average score of 90.7% and a 100% board exam pass rate — many surpassing the 80% mark.

The school’s alumni are walking success stories. Take Saloni Prasad, for instance — a young woman who graduated with a 9.6 CGPA in Class 10, pursued a master’s degree in biotechnology, and now serves as a Project Associate at ICMR-NIN, Hyderabad. “My alma mater nurtured my skills, values, and a lifelong love of learning,” she reflects, embodying the promise of a brighter future for her peers.

But the transformation doesn’t stop at the school gates. In partnership with the Government of Odisha under the ‘Mo School Abhiyan’, Vedanta has helped modernise 22 government schools, equipping them with cutting-edge technology. The Vedanta Mini Science Center, along with the Vedanta Gyanashree and Meritorious Scholarships, ensures that science education and academic excellence are within reach for deserving students, regardless of their background.

Education, especially in underserved regions, is more than just a learning process — it is a powerful equaliser. In Kalahandi, it is enabling communities to step into the national mainstream, participate in the larger economy, and dream without limits.
