GMR Kamalanga Energy Limited (GKEL), a subsidiary of GMR Power and Urban Infra Ltd (GPUIL), has been conferred with the prestigious Pollution Control Excellence Award-2025 by the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB), Odisha, for its exemplary contribution towards reducing industrial pollution and implementing innovative environmental practices.
The recognition was presented under the category of ‘Industry’ during a state-level function organized by SPCB Odisha on the eve of its 42nd Foundation Day in Bhubaneswar. The award was handed over by Dr. Kambhampati Hari Babu, Governor of Odisha, to Manoj Mishra, Plant Head of GKEL, in the presence of Manoj Ahuja, Chief Secretary and Chairman of SPCB Odisha, and Satyabrata Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary, Forest, Environment & Climate Change Department.
GKEL has set a benchmark in sustainable development with significant achievements in environmental management. The company has ensured 100% fly ash utilization, maintained zero liquid discharge status, and adopted robust waste management practices under its integrated management system certified with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and EnMS 50001. These initiatives reflect GKEL’s commitment to innovation, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
Expressing pride in the achievement, Ashis Basu, CEO of GMR Energy, said, “We are honoured to have been recognised for our initiatives towards effective pollution control measures and adoption of sound environmental management practices at GKEL. We continue to work on a continual improvement plan to strengthen our efforts in conserving and promoting a green and clean environment.”
Beyond pollution control, GKEL has undertaken extensive ecological initiatives including rainwater harvesting, organic farming, and the development of a green belt by planting more than four lakh trees over 382 acres. These efforts highlight its long-term commitment to sustainability and biodiversity enhancement.
GKEL operates a 1,050 MW (3×350 MW) coal-based power plant at Kamalanga village in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district, strategically positioned near the state’s coal belt. The plant supplies power through long-term Power Purchase Agreements with GRIDCO (Odisha), Uttar and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigams (UHBVNL and DHBVNL), Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB), and a medium-term agreement with Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).
