The International Gemological Institute (IGI), the world’s foremost authority in lab-grown diamond certification, has reinforced its unwavering commitment to applying the universal 4Cs grading system—Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat—to all diamonds, irrespective of their origin. At a time when several players in the industry are shifting towards alternative and less stringent grading metrics for lab-grown diamonds, IGI has chosen to stand firm in its principles, continuing to prioritize consumer clarity, trust, and market consistency.
As the pioneer in lab-grown diamond grading since 2005, IGI recognized early on that lab-grown diamonds possess the same physical, chemical, and optical characteristics as their natural counterparts. Emulating the established norms from the cultured pearl sector, IGI adopted the same 4Cs grading scale, ensuring a unified framework that eliminates confusion among consumers, manufacturers, and retailers.
In an official statement, IGI emphasized its role as an independent third-party evaluator committed to transparency, scientific accuracy, and ethical integrity. “Since inception, IGI has remained steadfast in its mission as an independent, third-party authentication body—unbiased and free from external influence. Our commitment to transparency, integrity, and scientific accuracy has earned us the trust of consumers, manufacturers, and retailers around the world,” the statement read.
Every diamond certified by IGI undergoes a meticulous 14-step grading process conducted by expert gemologists using advanced, state-of-the-art technology. This comprehensive approach ensures precision, impartiality, and a standard of excellence that the global industry relies upon.
With 31 laboratories spread across 10 countries, IGI operates the largest gemological network in the world. The Institute’s global leadership is underpinned by several key credentials: ISO 17025 accreditation for technical and analytical excellence, rigorous audits by a Big Four accounting firm to ensure robust internal governance, and active membership in the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), highlighting its commitment to ethical practices and sustainability.
Adding further credibility to its global standing, IGI holds the distinction of being the only gemological laboratory publicly listed on a stock exchange, reflecting its dedication to financial transparency and corporate accountability.
