Port Secretary Vijay Kumar reviews Paradip Port’s core systems, inaugurates key facilities to boost efficiency and safety

In a significant push toward strengthening India’s maritime infrastructure, Vijay Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, conducted an extensive review of critical operational and infrastructure systems at Paradip Port Authority (PPA) during his visit on Saturday. Senior officials welcomed him and provided an overview of the port’s technology-driven frameworks and expansion initiatives.

The visit commenced at the Command Control Center at Gate No. 4, where the Secretary examined real-time vessel traffic management, marine safety monitoring, the Digital Access Control System and other integrated digital platforms that streamline day-to-day marine operations. He then proceeded to the Wet Basin to assess berth readiness and vessel movement mechanisms, with PPA Chairman P. L. Haranadh detailing ongoing improvements aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and future capacity.

A major part of the review focused on the Mechanised Coal Handling Plant (MCHP). At its Plant Monitoring Room, the Secretary evaluated the Rail Receival System and other core coal-handling processes. He further inspected the NIOB Wagon Tippler along with the Stacker and Reclaimer system, examining their ability to support high-volume cargo operations through faster unloading, efficient stacking and seamless mechanised handling.

The Secretary also assessed the automated Silo Loading System at KICT, which accelerates cargo loading while enabling dust-free, environmentally safer operations. During a visit to an iron ore–handling vessel, he reviewed ship loading practices, real-time coordination and safety protocols. He later inaugurated the upgraded Dust Suppression System at MCHP, reinforcing PPA’s emphasis on cleaner and safer cargo management.

At the Administrative Building, he chaired a detailed Port Review Meeting with senior officers and stakeholders, focusing on operational performance, logistics enhancement and long-term strategies for sustainable maritime growth. He also inaugurated two major facilities — the Integrated Gate No. 1 Complex and the SCADA system for Sub-Stations — designed to strengthen security, facilitate smoother cargo traffic and improve smart power management.

As part of his visit, the Secretary toured the Paradip Golf Course, where a newly added hole has been integrated to support sports, recreation and the welfare of seafarers and port employees. A tree plantation drive was also carried out at the venue, contributing to the port’s environmental sustainability efforts.

With a continued focus on technology adoption, improved service delivery and community-oriented growth, Paradip Port Authority reaffirmed its commitment to evolving as a modern, efficient and environmentally responsible maritime hub.
