Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has marked a significant milestone in its sustainability journey by consuming 1.57 billion units of renewable energy in FY25, reinforcing its commitment to India’s clean-energy and decarbonisation goals. The achievement represents a decisive step forward in the company’s 2030 roadmap, underscoring its leadership in low-carbon manufacturing at a time when energy efficiency and climate responsibility are national priorities.

Alongside the sharp rise in green power consumption, Vedanta Aluminium has recorded an 8.96 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity since FY21, driven by a combination of energy-efficiency measures, process optimisation and the growing integration of renewable power across its operations. The company has also strengthened its long-term strategy to secure around 1,500 MW of renewable energy through power purchase agreements, positioning clean energy as a core pillar of its operational model.

During FY25, Vedanta Aluminium significantly expanded its renewable-energy portfolio through long-term agreements, while continuing to scale energy-conservation initiatives across its smelters and refineries. These efforts include advanced waste-heat recovery systems, enhanced boiler and turbine performance, deployment of energy-efficient technologies and real-time digital monitoring to curb energy consumption at the plant level. The company’s patented potlining technology has emerged as a key innovation, delivering operational energy savings of 200 kWh per tonne of aluminium and improving overall smelter efficiency.

The cumulative impact of these measures translated into energy savings of 378 million units, reinforcing Vedanta Aluminium’s focus on lowering energy intensity while maintaining operational excellence. Building on this momentum, the company’s FY25 performance marks a meaningful advancement in its long-term clean-energy transition.

Strengthening its climate action framework, Vedanta Aluminium formalised a strategic partnership with PwC India in 2025 to scale decarbonisation, water positivity and biodiversity initiatives across all major locations. It has also instituted dedicated Communities of Practice focused on carbon, water, waste, biodiversity and tailings, enabling consistent tracking, governance and implementation of sustainability actions. Under its 2030 targets, the company aims for 30 per cent of its product portfolio to comprise low-carbon aluminium, led by the expansion of its Restora and Restora Ultra product lines to meet rising demand for greener materials.

Commenting on the milestone, Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said, “Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond incremental improvements; it is about transforming the way aluminium is produced in India. By consuming 1.57 billion units of renewable energy this year, we are accelerating our journey towards a low-carbon future, embedding clean energy and efficiency at the core of our operations. This milestone reflects our resolve to lead India’s green manufacturing transition while creating shared value for our communities and stakeholders.”

The company has also embedded a culture of energy responsibility through structured training and awareness programmes for employees across sites, aligned with global best practices and ISO 50001 energy management standards. Complementing its energy initiatives are measures such as increased use of biomass briquettes, deployment of India’s largest electric forklift fleet, natural gas adoption for cleaner operations, and sustained investments in community development.

As India observes National Energy Conservation Day on December 14, Vedanta Aluminium’s achievements reaffirm its alignment with the nation’s vision for responsible energy use, efficiency and a greener economic future.
