Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has rolled out a comprehensive series of targeted monsoon health initiatives to strengthen community well-being in Rayagada and Kalahandi districts of Odisha. These interventions are being delivered through the company’s Mobile Health Unit (MHU) programme, a cornerstone of its community development efforts.
More than 1,500 people benefited from free malaria testing, guidance on early symptom recognition, and preventive measures such as sanitation upkeep, use of mosquito nets, and removal of stagnant water — critical actions to curb seasonal disease outbreaks. Additionally, a monsoon preparedness workshop was conducted for 80 Self-Help Group (SHG) women from five villages, covering household hygiene, safe drinking water access, snake-bite prevention, and first-response protocols, equipping participants with practical knowledge to protect families during the season.
Through its MHU network, Vedanta Aluminium has provided quality healthcare to over 20,000 residents across more than 35 remote villages in Rayagada and Kalahandi. In the past two years alone, over 2,000 free health camps have been conducted, bridging vital healthcare gaps in underserved areas. Each MHU is a fully equipped medical van staffed by a doctor, nurse, lab technician, and pharmacist, offering check-ups, screenings, blood sugar tests, essential medicines, and regular preventive care awareness sessions.
Commenting on the initiative, Vedanta Aluminium CEO Rajiv Kumar said, “At Vedanta Aluminium, we are committed to proactive health interventions that go beyond seasonal challenges. Our focus is on building long-term well-being, raising awareness, and ensuring access to quality healthcare for all. Through our Mobile Health Unit, we deliver healthcare on wheels and conduct awareness drives to help create healthier communities.”
Nabin Naik, a community member, shared, “The awareness sessions by Vedanta have greatly improved our understanding of health and safety practices during the monsoon. We now feel better prepared to protect our families and take preventive steps.”
Vedanta Aluminium continues to empower local communities by promoting education, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods, infrastructure, and grassroots sports and culture. These efforts reaffirm its commitment to driving transformation within and beyond its operational areas, fostering collective growth and progress in Odisha. By working closely with local authorities and stakeholders, the company ensures its initiatives yield tangible socio-economic benefits.
A business of Vedanta Limited, Vedanta Aluminium is India’s largest aluminium producer, manufacturing over half of the country’s aluminium — 2.42 million tonnes in FY25. A leader in value-added aluminium products for core industries, it ranked 2nd globally in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2024 for the aluminium sector, reflecting its best-in-class sustainability practices. With world-class smelters, an alumina refinery, and power plants in India, the company drives emerging applications of aluminium as the “Metal of the Future” for a greener tomorrow.
