Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has expanded its low-carbon product portfolio by commencing the production of ‘Restora’ at its Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO) plant in Korba, Chhattisgarh. A subsidiary of Vedanta Limited, BALCO’s inclusion in the Restora production network marks a major milestone in Vedanta Aluminium’s journey toward Net Zero Carbon by 2050, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable manufacturing.
Restora is produced using renewable energy and maintains a verified greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity of below 4 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of aluminium, meeting the global benchmark for low-carbon aluminium. This strengthens Vedanta Aluminium’s position as a key enabler of decarbonised global supply chains, underscoring BALCO’s alignment with the company’s larger sustainability goals.
Vedanta Aluminium first introduced Restora in early 2022 at its Jharsuguda smelter, which also manufactures Restora Ultra — an ultra-low carbon variant produced from recovered aluminium. With BALCO now producing Restora ingots, the company plans to further diversify the product line in response to evolving industry needs and growing global demand for sustainable materials.
Highlighting the significance of this development, Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said: “Restora has already set a benchmark in low-carbon aluminium production. With its introduction at BALCO, we are expanding sustainable aluminium manufacturing across our operations. This is a strategic step toward positioning India as a global hub for climate-conscious industrial growth.”
Echoing this sentiment, Rajesh Kumar, CEO and Director, BALCO, added: “Designed for sectors such as automotive, construction, electricals, packaging, and renewable energy, Restora helps our customers build greener value chains and transition toward responsible manufacturing. While we have introduced Restora ingots, we are also equipped to offer value-added products under the Restora brand to meet evolving market demands.”
The expansion of Restora production to BALCO forms a crucial part of Vedanta Aluminium’s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions across its entire value chain. Through continued focus on operational efficiency and clean energy adoption, the company has achieved an 8.96% reduction in GHG intensity since FY21.
Recognising aluminium’s pivotal role as the “metal of the future” in clean energy technologies and climate-resilient infrastructure, Vedanta Aluminium has established a Centre of Excellence to drive innovation across sectors such as electric mobility, renewable energy, infrastructure, and aerospace.
With Restora, Vedanta Aluminium continues to deliver sustainably produced aluminium that meets the needs of a climate-conscious world, reinforcing India’s leadership in sustainable industrial transformation.
