Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has announced a significant expansion at its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) facility in Jharsuguda, Odisha, enhancing the installed capacity of its Primary Foundry Alloy (PFA) unit by 120 kilo tonnes per annum (KTPA). This move is poised to reinforce India’s position in the global aluminium value chain, particularly in the automotive and engineering sectors.
Vedanta Aluminium was the first Indian company to manufacture and supply PFAs domestically. These alloys are critical in producing high-performance automotive components such as alloy wheels, engine blocks, cylinder heads, and transmission housings. Valued for their superior castability, strength, and thermal conductivity, PFAs enable the production of lightweight, fuel-efficient vehicles that meet stringent BS-VI and Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) emission norms.

Highlighting the expansion’s strategic relevance, Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said: “This capacity addition marks a major milestone in our mission to deliver advanced aluminium solutions and support India’s emergence as a global manufacturing hub. It reflects our commitment to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and our drive to meet evolving industry demands with best-in-class quality and reliability.”
Sunil Gupta, COO, Vedanta Aluminium, added: “As we expand our portfolio of value-added products, we are not only advancing the transition to lightweight and energy-efficient vehicles but also strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities and reducing dependency on imports.”
The timing of this expansion is aligned with strong market momentum. While the global PFA market is growing at a 5.8 per cent CAGR, India is outpacing this at 6.5 per cent annually, driven by rapid growth in the automotive sector, the rise of electric vehicles, and increased demand for lightweight materials. The Indian PFA market is projected to grow at 7 per cent CAGR over the next five years, boosted by initiatives like Make in India, Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, and EV adoption.
The Jharsuguda facility is equipped with advanced casting lines from Befesa, Spain, and features cutting-edge technologies including in-line metal treatment, degassing, and vertical chill casting, ensuring that Vedanta’s PFAs meet the highest global standards. These capabilities position Vedanta as a trusted supplier not only within India but also across key international markets including Europe, North America, and Asia.
Sustainability continues to be central to Vedanta Aluminium’s strategy. The company is certified under the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Chain of Custody, covering its PFAs, billets, wire rods, and low-carbon aluminium products such as Restora and Restora Ultra. This certification assures customers of ethical sourcing, traceability, and reduced carbon impact—values increasingly demanded by environmentally conscious consumers.
Vedanta Aluminium’s expansion of its PFA capacity is not just about scale — it represents a forward-looking, technology-led, and sustainability-focused approach to shaping the future of high-performance alloys in India and around the world.
