On the occasion of World Environment Day, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, announced a significant expansion of its partnership with PwC India to drive sustainability initiatives across its operations in Odisha and Chhattisgarh. The collaboration, which initially focused on biodiversity projects at Vedanta’s Jharsuguda smelter, will now scale to encompass decarbonisation, water positivity, and biodiversity conservation across all operational sites. This move underscores Vedanta Aluminium’s ambitious sustainability targets, including achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050, Net Water Positivity by 2030, and No Net Loss of biodiversity.
The broadened partnership marks a key milestone in Vedanta’s mission to integrate environmental responsibility throughout its value chain. It aims to generate measurable outcomes in critical areas aligned with global benchmarks, such as the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) and the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), reinforcing the company’s role in shaping a greener future.
Speaking about the development, Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said, “At Vedanta Aluminium, our ‘Transforming for Good’ philosophy is the cornerstone of our commitment to sustainability, inclusivity, and meaningful community impact. This collaboration with PwC exemplifies our unwavering dedication to driving sustainable growth and championing environmental stewardship. Anchored in robust ESG principles, we are actively working towards carbon neutrality by 2050 and supporting India’s Net Zero vision for 2070. By addressing critical ecological challenges, improving operational efficiencies, and placing communities at the heart of our efforts, we aim to transform the global aluminium industry. Together, we are forging a path to a more sustainable planet and redefining what responsible business truly means.”
Echoing this sentiment, Sandeep Kumar Mohanty, Partner – Climate & Energy at PwC India, remarked, “We are excited to partner with Vedanta Aluminium on this inspiring journey to embed sustainability across its operations. Together, we are committed to making a real difference in the lives of people and the environment. By combining innovative approaches with community engagement, we aim to support Vedanta Aluminium’s efforts in creating a greener future for all stakeholders.”
As part of the engagement, PwC India will support Vedanta Aluminium in implementing a comprehensive decarbonisation roadmap that aligns with ASI standards to facilitate green aluminium production. It will also assist in reducing water consumption, aiding the company’s goal of becoming water positive by 2030. Additionally, biodiversity management plans will be designed to ensure No Net Loss of biodiversity through measures like the eradication of invasive species and the reintroduction of native flora. The partnership also includes evaluating the adoption of SBTi frameworks to align carbon reduction strategies with the Paris Agreement goals.
These initiatives are expected to accelerate progress toward multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 13 (Climate Action), and Goal 15 (Life on Land). With a comprehensive approach that blends technological innovation, ecosystem restoration, and community participation, Vedanta Aluminium aims to lead the global aluminium sector in sustainable transformation.
A business of Vedanta Limited, Vedanta Aluminium produced 2.42 million tonnes of aluminium in FY25 — over half of India’s total output. The company is widely recognized for its sustainability performance, ranking second in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2024 for the aluminium sector. With state-of-the-art smelters, an alumina refinery, and power assets across India, Vedanta Aluminium continues to drive the emergence of aluminium as the ‘Metal of the Future,’ committed to delivering a greener tomorrow.
