Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, has reinforced its leadership in sustainable industrial transformation with the release of its Sustainable Development Report FY25. The company reported an 8.96% reduction in carbon intensity from its FY21 baseline, announced plans to source 1,500 MW of renewable power by 2030, and achieved 100% fly ash utilization — demonstrating its pivotal role in driving India’s journey toward Net Zero by 2070.
Guided by its ESG vision of “Transforming for Good” and philosophy “Responsible Today, Sustainable Always,” Vedanta Aluminium continues to embed sustainability across every facet of its operations — from decarbonizing smelters and refining processes to advancing circular economy initiatives and community well-being. With world-class facilities in Odisha and Chhattisgarh, the company produced 2.42 million tonnes of aluminium in FY25 — over half of India’s total output—while maintaining zero environmental non-compliance. Its recent Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Chain of Custody certification further strengthens its global credentials as a supplier of responsibly produced aluminium.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, emphasized the company’s forward-looking approach, saying, “At Vedanta Aluminium, sustainability is not just a compliance measure, it is our strategic compass for growth. Our ESG progress reflects how a hard-to-abate sector like aluminium can embrace transformation through innovation, renewable energy, and circularity. We are proud to lead India’s journey toward Net Zero, proving that industrial progress and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.”
At the heart of Vedanta Aluminium’s ESG journey lies its robust decarbonization agenda. The company has achieved a record-low carbon intensity of 17.01 tCO₂e per tonne of aluminium, driven by efficiency measures and clean energy adoption. Its plan to secure 1,500 MW of renewable energy through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) by 2030 will further accelerate the transition to green energy.
In a major step forward, Vedanta has partnered with GAIL Gas Limited to supply natural gas to its Jharsuguda smelter — a transition expected to cut over 47,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually by the end of 2025. GAIL is constructing a 7.5 km pipeline to deliver 32,000 SCM/day of natural gas, supporting Vedanta’s upcoming 430 KTPA cast house and contributing significantly to its decarbonization roadmap.
Vedanta Aluminium continues to set benchmarks in circular resource management. The company achieved over 100% fly ash utilization, repurposing 12.08 million metric tonnes for use in cement, bricks, mine reclamation, and road construction. In FY25 alone, Vedanta recycled and reused 14.6 million metric tonnes of waste, ensuring minimal landfill impact while generating value for industries and communities alike. Its sustainability drive extends to water stewardship, biodiversity protection, and the restoration of mined lands, underscoring a holistic approach to responsible growth.
Vedanta’s FY25 performance highlights measurable sustainability outcomes. The company consumed 1,570 million units (MU) of renewable energy, saved 378 MU through energy efficiency measures, and recycled 16.79 million cubic metres of water — maintaining Zero Liquid Discharge across all operational sites.
With over 70 startup collaborations and 100+ technology-led projects, Vedanta Aluminium is integrating robotics, artificial intelligence, and smart safety systems across its value chain. The company is also embedding climate resilience through proactive risk assessments, adaptive infrastructure design, and ecosystem restoration initiatives in operational regions.
Vedanta Aluminium’s Restora (low-carbon aluminium) and Restora Ultra (ultra-low carbon aluminium) product lines underscore its leadership in green metal manufacturing. With a greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity of below 4 tCO₂e per tonne — nearly half the global benchmark — these products represent the future of sustainable aluminium. The company aims for 30% of its production to comprise low-carbon aluminium by 2030.
Through its transparent ESG reporting, measurable performance, and forward-looking strategy, Vedanta Aluminium is redefining how heavy industries can operate sustainably. By aligning its business goals with national priorities such as Make in India and Net Zero 2070, the company stands at the forefront of India’s green industrial transformation — powering both economic progress and environmental stewardship for generations to come.
