In observance of National Cancer Awareness Day on November 7, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, organized a community outreach session at Women’s College, Jharsuguda. The initiative is part of Vedanta’s ongoing commitment to public health and wellbeing, focusing on equipping young women with critical knowledge on early cancer detection, healthy living, and support services.

Cancer continues to be one of the most significant health challenges globally, with delayed diagnosis and a lack of awareness contributing to advanced-stage diagnoses. In India, the disease impacts not only individuals physically but also emotionally and financially. Research underscores the importance of early detection in improving treatment outcomes, with timely screening and understanding of early symptoms being key to saving lives. Grassroots education, particularly in communities, is an essential tool in combating this prevalent disease.

The awareness session featured a panel of medical experts who engaged with students on a range of topics, including common cancer risk factors such as tobacco use, poor diet, prolonged stress, and genetic predisposition. The session emphasized the importance of recognizing early signs of cancer and the need for regular health check-ups. Students were encouraged to ask questions, share personal experiences, and reflect on the importance of prioritizing their health.

Speaking on the initiative, C Chandru, CEO of Vedanta Jharsuguda, said, “At Vedanta, we believe that community development begins with informed, empowered individuals. By raising health awareness, we can positively impact the lives of families in the region. Through such initiatives, we aim to build resilient communities that prioritize health, make informed choices, and embrace preventive care.”

Ansu Kumari Rai, a student at Women’s College, Jharsuguda, shared, “This session helped us move past fear and stigma, providing clarity on the importance of cancer awareness. It transformed the topic from one of uncertainty to one grounded in knowledge, confidence, and proactive wellbeing. We now feel empowered to take charge of our health.”

Vedanta Jharsuguda’s commitment to sustainable community development spans multiple areas, including healthcare, education, women’s empowerment, and social infrastructure. The company collaborates closely with government agencies, healthcare institutions, and grassroots organizations to ensure comprehensive outreach efforts. These initiatives have already led to meaningful health improvements in rural communities.

As India’s largest aluminium producer, Vedanta Aluminium manufactures over 2.42 million tonnes of aluminium annually, making up more than half of the nation’s total production in FY25. A leader in value-added aluminium products, the company plays a critical role in industries that shape the future of technology and sustainability. Ranked 2nd in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (DJSI) 2024 for the aluminium industry, Vedanta is a frontrunner in promoting sustainable practices and driving the growth of aluminium as the “Metal of the Future” for a greener tomorrow.
