Vedanta Aluminium, India’s leading aluminium producer, is making a transformative impact in rural Kalahandi through two groundbreaking clean energy initiatives — Project Roshan and Project Jyoti. These efforts aim to brighten public spaces and homes with sustainable, solar-powered solutions, enhancing safety, mobility, and the quality of life in the region’s peripheral villages.

Under Project Roshan, Vedanta’s Lanjigarh unit is installing 310 solar-powered streetlights, including 250 standard units and 60 high-mast lights, throughout nearby communities, benefiting more than 15,000 residents. In the first phase, 91 units (76 standard and 15 high-mast lights) have already been set up across 25 locations, directly illuminating the lives of over 5,000 people.

Parallel to this, Project Jyoti is focused on providing solar home lights to households in remote villages where power supply is inconsistent. To date, Vedanta has equipped 398 households across eight villages with solar-powered lights and plans to extend the program to an additional eight villages, aiming to distribute 1,500 solar home lights in total.

Speaking about the initiative, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, CEO – Vedanta Alumina Business, said, “At Vedanta Lanjigarh, we firmly believe that the journey toward clean energy starts at the grassroots level. Project Roshan and Project Jyoti are a testament to our commitment to sustainable development. By lighting up rural communities with solar energy, we are not only enhancing safety and encouraging greater social participation but also advancing the region’s clean energy goals. It’s a small technological step that creates a giant leap in improving community welfare.”

The impact of these solar installations is already visible — roads are safer, women and children experience improved security, markets are open longer, and dependency on conventional electricity has diminished. Furthermore, the projects contribute to promoting renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure in rural Kalahandi.

In alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Project Roshan directly supports SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). By harnessing solar power to light up villages, the initiative underscores Vedanta Lanjigarh’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility, renewable energy adoption, and building resilient rural infrastructure.

Through initiatives like these, Vedanta Lanjigarh continues to empower local communities, strengthen rural infrastructure, and foster sustainable livelihoods. By integrating clean energy solutions with community development, Vedanta is helping to drive Odisha’s inclusive growth, making Lanjigarh a beacon of sustainable, community-focused progress that bridges business goals with societal well-being.
