Emphasising the need to shed remnants of the colonial mindset and embrace a nationalist approach anchored in constitutional values, President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday said the Constitution remains the guiding text for India’s progress. She was addressing the Constitution Day celebration at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan in the Capital.

President Murmu recalled that the decision taken in 2015 — during the 125th birth anniversary year of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar — to commemorate Constitution Day annually has proved “truly meaningful” in deepening public understanding of democratic ideals. The observance, she said, not only reaffirms the nation’s collective respect for the Constitution but also instills constitutional awareness among citizens, especially the youth.

The President highlighted that the Constituent Assembly’s reasoning for adopting the parliamentary system continues to hold relevance today. India’s Parliament, she noted, stands as a model for democracies worldwide, representing the aspirations of the people of the world’s largest democracy.

Underscoring the core values embedded in the Constitution—justice, liberty, equality and fraternity — President Murmu said she was pleased that Members of Parliament have worked to realise these ideals. She noted India’s rapid economic progress, including its stride toward becoming the world’s third-largest economy, and the significant achievement of lifting nearly 250 million people out of poverty as indicators of the Constitution’s success in ensuring economic justice.

Calling the Constitution a document of national pride and identity, the President said its spirit has guided key legislative reforms, including the recently implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam — laws rooted in justice rather than punishment and reflective of contemporary social and technological realities.

She also highlighted the growing strength of India’s democratic processes, pointing to higher women’s voter turnout and the active participation of youth, farmers, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and economically weaker sections from Panchayats to Parliament. This diverse engagement, she said, enriches the nation’s democratic consciousness.

President Murmu reiterated that the Directive Principles of State Policy continue to guide India’s governance model. Citing Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s caution that the success of independence depends on those who implement the Constitution, she expressed satisfaction that Parliament has consistently worked in the national interest to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.

She said that through the harmonious functioning of the executive, legislature and judiciary, India has achieved stability and consistent development, enabling citizens to lead secure and dignified lives. The President added that India’s parliamentary tradition — marked by deep political reflection—will be remembered in “golden letters” in the comparative study of world democracies.

Expressing confidence in the leadership of Parliament, President Murmu said its members remain “bearers, creators and witnesses” of India’s constitutional legacy. She concluded by expressing optimism that guided by constitutional principles, the nation’s resolve to become a developed country will certainly be achieved.
