In a major institutional boost for eastern India, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has approved the establishment of its dedicated eastern region headquarters in Bhubaneswar. The move, formalised through an official notification, is expected to significantly strengthen audit oversight and inter-state coordination across the region.
Scheduled to become operational on April 15, 2026, the new office will be headed by the Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General or the Additional Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General (Eastern Region). The headquarters is mandated to take over all roles and responsibilities currently managed by the Eastern Region wing operating from the CAG’s New Delhi office, marking a strategic decentralisation aimed at improving efficiency and responsiveness.
Government officials said the Bhubaneswar-based headquarters will supervise the audit operations of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal. By bringing the command centre closer to the states it serves, the CAG aims to ensure more focused coordination, better monitoring of audit processes and enhanced oversight of public expenditure.
The decision is being viewed as a significant administrative milestone for Odisha, further establishing Bhubaneswar as an emerging hub for major national institutions. The new regional office is expected to streamline audit mechanisms and enable quicker decision-making, ultimately contributing to stronger governance and financial accountability across the eastern region.
