A tragic aviation disaster struck Ahmedabad on Wednesday morning as Air India flight AI171, en route to London’s Gatwick Airport, crashed shortly after takeoff, plummeting into the densely populated Meghaninagar area. The aircraft was carrying over 130 passengers, and rescue operations are currently underway.

Panic gripped the city as thick plumes of smoke rose from the crash site, visible from several kilometers away, including areas like Vastrapur. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos, with residents rushing to assist before emergency services cordoned off the area to facilitate rescue efforts.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, State Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner to coordinate a high-level emergency response. Roads surrounding Meghaninagar have been locked down to enable quick access for ambulances, firefighters, and disaster relief teams.

Preliminary information indicates that former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was onboard, reportedly seated in seat 2D. His condition remains unknown at this time, and officials have not released a complete passenger list.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu expressed his grief in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Shocked and devastated to learn about the flight crash in Ahmedabad. We are on highest alert. I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action.” He confirmed that rescue and medical teams are on-site, with injured passengers being transported to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for treatment.

Condolences have poured in from across the political spectrum. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “Stunned and profoundly shocked to know of the most tragic Air India plane crash at Ahmedabad today. It is most sad news for all of us, even while we anxiously wait for survivor details and pray for the survival of all.” Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis also expressed anguish, saying he was “pained and shocked,” and extended prayers for everyone’s safety.

Officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. While no official reason has been confirmed, aviation experts and crash investigators are being dispatched to the scene.

Authorities have appealed to the public to avoid the area to ensure unhindered rescue and relief work. More updates are expected as the situation unfolds.
