As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, NTPC Bongaigaon conducted a medical examination and identification camp on June 10, 2025, under the ambit of the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) 2025. The initiative aims to foster equal opportunities and holistic development for underprivileged girls in the region.
The camp was formally inaugurated by Arnab Maitra, Business Unit Head and Head of Project, NTPC Bongaigaon, in the presence of Kasturi Maitra, President of Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club. Addressing the gathering, Maitra reiterated NTPC’s commitment to nurturing young talent and empowering girls through structured interventions. He described the medical camp as a significant step towards a transformative journey for the participants.
Kasturi Maitra, accompanied by office bearers of the Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club, reviewed the camp arrangements and extended full support, reaffirming the club’s dedication to community welfare and inclusive development.
The camp witnessed participation from 50 girls aged 10 to 12 years, representing nine local schools. Of these, 40 will be shortlisted for the four-week residential module starting July 1, 2025. The day’s activities included health assessments, collection of guardian consent forms, and measurements for uniforms and ID cards, all managed by NTPC staff and support teams.
Currently in its fourth edition at NTPC Bongaigaon, the GEM program offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers educational reinforcement, hygiene and nutrition awareness, basic self-defense, and confidence-building exercises. Sessions are also held on Hindi and English communication, foundational mathematics, yoga, gender sensitivity, cyber safety, and creative expression through music, dance, and theatre.
To tailor the program to the needs of the participants, a baseline survey was conducted on May 3, 2025, to assess their existing knowledge and skill levels.
Launched in 2018 with 392 participants across three locations, the Girl Empowerment Mission has since evolved into a nationwide initiative. Now active in 17 states, it has positively impacted over 12,700 girls by challenging societal barriers and promoting education and empowerment.
Through GEM and other socially-driven initiatives, NTPC continues to demonstrate its commitment to inclusive growth, establishing its identity not just as India’s largest power producer but also as a responsible and compassionate corporate citizen.
