JSW Steel’s Nuagaon Mine bags Kalinga Environmental Excellence Award 2024 for green mining leadership

JSW Steel’s Nuagaon Mine in Odisha has been conferred with the prestigious Kalinga Environmental Excellence National Award 2024, earning a remarkable 4-star rating for its unwavering dedication to sustainable mining and ecological stewardship. The award was presented at the 10th National Conclave on Environment, Energy & Climate Change, held in Bhubaneswar on June 21, 2025.

Receiving the honour on behalf of JSW Steel Odisha, Ram Shankar Sharma, Head of Mines Operations and Projects, was joined by the company’s environmental team. The recognition underlines the Nuagaon Mine’s exemplary compliance with environmental norms, its commitment to minimizing ecological impact, and the adoption of responsible mining practices that align with national and global sustainability goals.

The conclave served as a convergence point for leading environmentalists, policymakers, scholars, and industry leaders, who gathered to deliberate on critical environmental challenges and actionable strategies. This year’s theme, “Actions to End Plastic Pollution Globally,” set the tone for a series of high-level discussions on topics such as net-zero pathways, decarbonization, policy frameworks, and innovative energy solutions.

Notable dignitaries present at the event included Uma Nanduri, Member Secretary of the Odisha Pollution Control Board; Dr. Nihar Ranjan Sahoo, Chief Environmental Engineer, SPCB; P. K. Merkap, former PCCF, Government of Rajasthan and Chairperson of the Odisha State Food Commission; Prof. (Dr.) Jaya Krushna Panigrahi, Working President of the Orissa Environmental Society; and international climate expert Prof. Joyce Kakuramatsi Kikafunda from Uganda.

In addition to recognizing excellence in environmental compliance, the conclave celebrated outstanding achievements in corporate social responsibility, energy efficiency, and climate governance. JSW Steel’s accolade stands as a testament to its proactive environmental strategies and its role in setting new benchmarks for green mining across the country.
