In a major step towards reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability, Vedanta Aluminium — India’s largest producer of aluminium — has launched a groundbreaking plantation drive titled “Mo Gachha Mo Parivar” (My Tree, My Family) in Odisha’s Kalahandi and Rayagada districts. The campaign, which marks World Environment Day 2025, aims to plant over 1,00,000 fruit-bearing saplings, making a direct, positive impact on the lives of more than 30,000 rural families.

The saplings, including high-impact species like Mango, Guava, Jackfruit, and Moringa, were carefully selected for their ecological, nutritional, and economic value. These fruit trees are expected to enrich local communities by providing long-term benefits, such as increased biodiversity, improved soil quality, and sustainable income through harvesting and allied activities.

The launch event featured a community-driven plantation effort in Balabhadrapur village and Vedanta’s plant premises, with more than 600 participants, including employees, senior leadership, school children, government officials, and local residents. The heart of the campaign is the pledge embodied in the slogan “Mo Gachha, Mo Parivar,” which calls on everyone to treat each tree as a cherished member of the family. With more than 600 employee volunteers and support from Vedanta’s senior management, the drive is already being hailed as one of the largest environmental mobilizations in the region.

Beyond its immediate impact, the plantation drive is expected to offset approximately 1.5 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions over the trees’ lifetime, contributing significantly to climate change mitigation. The initiative will also restore local forests, enhance biodiversity, and stabilize the local ecosystem by preventing soil erosion and boosting soil retention. The introduction of fruit-bearing trees is anticipated to strengthen rural economies by providing an additional source of income to local families through agriculture and related activities.

Speaking on the initiative, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya, CEO – Vedanta Alumina Business said: “At Vedanta Lanjigarh, sustainability is not just a responsibility — it’s a way of life. Through ‘Mo Gachha Mo Parivar’, we are sowing seeds of hope, unity, and prosperity. We are proud to walk hand-in-hand with the community toward a greener and more resilient tomorrow.”

The drive aligns with Vedanta’s broader goals of contributing meaningfully to India’s climate targets. Looking ahead, the company plans to scale this initiative to state and national levels in the coming years, amplifying its positive environmental and socio-economic impact.

Vedanta Aluminium is India’s largest producer of aluminium, contributing over 2.42 million tonnes of aluminium in FY25. As a leader in value-added aluminium products, Vedanta is also at the forefront of sustainable development practices, ranking 2nd in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2024 for the aluminium industry. The company’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in its efforts to position aluminium as the “Metal of the Future,” supporting both a greener tomorrow and emerging industrial applications.
