Jindal Stainless initiates India’s first green hydrogen usage in stainless steel sector

Jindal Stainless (JSL) has embarked on a pioneering journey by initiating the use of green hydrogen at its stainless steel plant in Hisar, Haryana. This milestone, marking the first-ever application of green hydrogen in India’s stainless steel sector, underscores JSL’s commitment to sustainability and aligns with India’s ambitious targets of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions.

The inauguration of this groundbreaking initiative was conducted virtually by the Union Minister for Steel and Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia, from New Delhi. The event was graced by dignitaries including the Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Nagendra Nath Sinha, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, Abhyuday Jindal, and CEO of the technology partner, Hygenco Green Energies, Amit Bansal.

Commending this pioneering step, Jyotiraditya Scindia stated, “I congratulate both Jindal Stainless Limited and Hygenco for starting India’s first green hydrogen plant in the stainless steel sector. This path-breaking green hydrogen initiative will make the steel sector more green and sustainable.”

Emphasizing the importance of this initiative, Nagendra Nath Sinha remarked, “The decision of a long-term commitment by Jindal Stainless to green hydrogen technology reflects a forward-thinking approach mindful of its environmental responsibility.”

Abhyuday Jindal expressed optimism about the project, stating, “Our commitment to sustainability goes much beyond this pilot project. This is just the beginning.”

CEO of Hygenco, Amit Bansal, hailed the project as an unprecedented achievement in advancing the global green hydrogen revolution.

The state-of-the-art plant, established in collaboration with Hygenco Green Energies, utilizes an alkaline bipolar electrolyser with a capacity of 350 Nm3/hr, ensuring round-the-clock supply of green hydrogen using dedicated solar energy and storage. The facility aims to abate around 54,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions over 20 years.

This initiative aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to produce five million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. Jindal Stainless’s efforts in decarbonization have been showcased at global platforms, emphasizing its commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050.
