On the eve of World Kidney Day, a team of researchers from the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM) in Bengaluru unveiled groundbreaking findings regarding the efficacy of Neeri KFT, an herbal formulation, in managing serum creatinine levels and enhancing kidney function.

World Kidney Day, celebrated annually on the second Thursday of March, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the importance of kidney health and the growing burden of kidney diseases worldwide. Against this backdrop, the research findings presented by NIUM’s team provided a beacon of hope and a significant contribution to the global efforts aimed at combating kidney diseases.

Their study, published in the Avicenna Journal of Medical Biochemistry, showcased the remarkable benefits of Neeri KFT, a concoction crafted from a blend of herbs such as punarnava, gokshura, varuna, kasni, makoy, palash, and giloy by Delhi-based AIMIL Pharmaceuticals. Within a concise 42-day treatment period, patients experienced a notable regulation of serum creatinine levels, indicating a significant improvement in overall kidney health.

Dr. Sanchit Sharma, Executive Director of AIMIL Pharmaceuticals, underscored the increasing global recognition of traditional medicine, particularly Ayurveda’s rich repository of kidney-strengthening remedies, including Neeri KFT.

Early diagnosis of kidney disease emerged as a crucial factor, as highlighted by the study’s findings, which revealed substantial enhancements in patients’ conditions when treatment commenced promptly, even in the initial stages of the disease. However, the study also shed light on the pervasive challenges faced by patients worldwide, with a staggering 90 percent of Indian patients unable to afford treatment for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), while millions globally rely on dialysis or kidney transplants.

In their comprehensive study, researchers divided patients into two groups: one receiving Neeri-KFT and the other provided with Kabab Chini. Following a 42-day intervention, both groups exhibited a decrease in serum creatinine levels, alongside an improvement in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), key indicators of enhanced kidney function. Additionally, patients reported improvements in appetite and reduction in fatigue, further emphasizing the positive impact of the treatment.

The study’s conclusions highlighted the untapped potential of traditional medicine in treating various ailments, despite prevailing low awareness levels. The researchers emphasized the urgent need for greater accessibility to affordable treatment options, advocating for equitable healthcare access for all.

In a country where nine out of ten patients struggle to afford expensive treatments, this study serves as a beacon of hope, providing scientific validation for traditional medicine as a viable and cost-effective alternative. Through their pioneering research unveiled on World Kidney Day 2024, NIUM’s team has not only advanced our understanding of kidney health but also offered tangible solutions to address the global burden of kidney diseases.
