The Continuous Casting Machine-2 (CCM-2) belonging to the Steel Melting Shop-2 (SMS-2) Department of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has set a fresh record in casting the longest ever sequence of heats. The unit registered an all time best castings of 222 heats during the record sequence. Notably, it’s also the best sequence performance among all SAIL units.

The CCM-2 started the sequence on 17th April, 2023 at 15.42 hours and completed on 28th April, 2023 at 14.42 hours with a record total casting time of 263 hours. In the process, the unit produced 35,275 tonnes of crude steel (2071 slabs) with 25 Tundish flying and total cast length of 16,407 metres.

The Secondary Steel Units and Basic Oxygen furnace of SMS-2 played an instrumental role in the success by feeding heats with required quality, composition and temperature and at the right time. It was challenging as casting for this sort of long sequence never been achieved. However, the concerted efforts of the entire production chain and the supporting agencies viz. Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Research & Control Lab (RCL) and Production Planning & Control (PPC) helped the department achieve the target.

The record reiterates the unparalleled determination of the RSP collective who has time and again shown their brilliance to help the plant soar new highs.
