TPCODL meets record-breaking peak demand of 2140 MW in April; Bhubaneswar witnesses 22 pc surge in energy consumption

Bhubaneswar, May 02, 2024 (TBB Bureau): In a remarkable feat of engineering prowess, Tata Power Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL) has achieved an unprecedented milestone by seamlessly meeting the colossal peak demand of 2140 MW in April 2024, setting a new benchmark for energy distribution in the region. This achievement comes amidst soaring temperatures, with the state capital, Bhubaneswar, experiencing a scorching all-time high of 45.4 degrees Celsius. Notably, Bhubaneswar alone witnessed a peak demand surge to 627 MW on April 30, 2024, showcasing TPCODL’s unwavering capacity to cater to the escalating energy needs of the populace.

Compared to last year’s figures, TPCODL has witnessed a substantial surge in demand, with a remarkable 15 per cent increase in the company’s operational area and an impressive 22 per cent spike in Bhubaneswar city. These statistics paint a picture of the growing energy requirements amidst the relentless heatwave, propelling the peak demand projection to a staggering 2329 MW, as forecasted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Amidst these challenging conditions, TPCODL has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted power supply through a strategic deployment of cutting-edge technologies and meticulous infrastructure enhancements. Leveraging innovative solutions such as thermoscanning, ultra-sonic testing, and the implementation of advanced monitoring systems, TPCODL has fortified its distribution network to withstand the rigors of the scorching summer season.

At the heart of TPCODL’s operational efficiency lies its state-of-the-art Power System Control Centre (PSCC), functioning as a nerve center for real-time monitoring and management of the entire distribution network. Equipped with advanced IT and OT technologies including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, the PSCC ensures swift response to any operational exigencies, thereby guaranteeing reliable power supply to over 30 lakh customers across the state.

TPCODL CEO Arvind Singh expressed his firm resolve to uphold the company’s unwavering commitment to consumer satisfaction amidst the ongoing heatwave. “As Odisha undergoes a heatwave, we have implemented various measures to meet the rising demand. We remain steadfast in our commitment to providing an uninterrupted power supply to all our consumers. We are optimizing technology, deploying over 8000 linemen for on-ground maintenance, and are strengthening our network capacity to ensure smooth operation,” said Singh.

In addition to its proactive measures, TPCODL has reinforced its operational capabilities by stationing mobile distribution substations across its operational circles, ensuring swift response to any unforeseen contingencies and bolstering the reliability of power supply throughout the season.
