SJVN inaugurates India’s first multipurpose Green Hydrogen pilot project

NEW DELHI, APRIL 25, 2024 (TBB BUREAU):   In a significant milestone for the renewable energy sector, SJVN Ltd has inaugurated India’s first multipurpose Green Hydrogen Pilot Project at its 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) in Jhakri, Himachal Pradesh, announced the Ministry of Power on Thursday.

The project will produce Green Hydrogen using a combined heat and power approach, which will be utilized to fuel the High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) coating facility of NJHPS, meeting its combustion fuel needs. Additionally, the project will generate electricity through a 25 kW capacity fuel cell.

Operating for eight hours daily, the state-of-the-art pilot project is expected to produce 14 kg of Green Hydrogen daily. The hydrogen will be stored in six storage tanks at a pressure of 30 bars, with a total capacity of 12 m3. An alkaline electrolyser with a capacity of 20 Nm3/hour will be employed to produce hydrogen, powered by renewable energy from SJVN’s 1.31 MW solar power plant in Wadhal, Shimla.

In addition to power generation, Green Hydrogen will be used for the high-velocity oxygen fuel coating of turbine underwater parts, enhancing efficiency and sustainability in operations.

Geeta Kapur, Chairperson and Managing Director of SJVN, inaugurated the project on Wednesday, emphasizing its role in advancing Green Hydrogen production infrastructure in alignment with the Government of India’s Green Hydrogen Mission.

During her visit, Kapur also inaugurated the centralized operation of the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) and 412 MW Rampur Hydro Power Station. Notably, Unit-2 of the Rampur HPS is now operated remotely from the NJHPS Control Room at Jhakri, marking a significant achievement in tandem operation between the two hydro power stations.
