In an initiative to equip common people with life-saving skills, AIIMS Bhubaneswar conducted a three-day workshop focused on Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training for women NSS volunteers. The workshop, held in collaboration with the Odisha Government’s Higher Education Department, targeted NSS volunteers from 10 aspirational districts in the state.

Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, and social activist Tulasi Munda inaugurated the workshop, emphasizing the importance of empowering marginalized communities, especially women, with knowledge about their health and bodies. Dr. Biswas highlighted the workshop’s agenda, which included CPR basics, adolescent health, menstrual hygiene, nutritional requirements, and common non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension.

Tulasi Munda emphasized how the workshop would not only enhance the confidence of NSS women volunteers in handling health issues within their families and communities but also provide insights into maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Over 200 NSS women volunteers and 19 program officers from aspirational districts like Koraput, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Balangir, Subarnapur, and Nabarangpur participated in the workshop, which will run until February 8.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s NSS Bureau has already trained over 10,000 individuals in CPR, with a target to reach 1 lakh people. The institute has been actively providing life-saving skills to students and common people across the state.

The workshop’s importance is underscored by the alarming statistics of cardiovascular diseases in India, where one in four deaths is attributed to such diseases. With CPR playing a crucial role in saving lives during sudden cardiac arrests, initiatives like these are vital in ensuring timely intervention until medical care is available.

The event was attended by key figures including Sarita Patel, Regional Director of NSS, Bhubaneswar, Dr. PR Mohapatra, DEAN, and Dr. Dillip Kumar Parida, Medical Superintendent, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, among others, signifying the collaborative effort towards promoting healthcare awareness and life-saving skills in the community.
