UAIL’s ‘Project Kushali’ transforming lives of rural youth

Utkal Alumina International Limited (UAIL), a subsidiary of Aditya Birla Group has initiated “Project Kushali’ in collaboration with Sri Ganesh Driving Training School with the prime objective of opening a window of employment opportunities for youngsters in the rural areas.

Launched since April 13, 2022 in Nuapada village under Kashipur Block of Rayagada District and Gopinathpur village of Thuamul Rampur block in Kalahandi district, the program has been impactful, benefiting at least 150 youngsters as of now and most of them are now gainfully employed as drivers.

Commenting on the initiative, Utkal Alumina Unit Head & President Mazhar Beig said, “Through Project Kushali, we have not only imparted essential driving skills but also instilled a sense of self-reliance and confidence among the participants. Their success is a testament to the program’s effectiveness and its ability to create sustainable employment opportunities.”

By focusing on both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, this one-month training program ensures that participants learn safe driving techniques. The curriculum covers fundamental car control skills, driving techniques, and an in-depth understanding of traffic rules and regulations. Upon completion of the program, participants receive a driving license.

Sharing his experience, Raj Khura from Jabapadar village of Kashipur said, “Before joining Utkal Alumina’s driving training program, my job prospects in the village was limited. However, after completing the training and obtaining a driving license, my life has taken a positive turn. I am now employed as a driver with a local transport company, and this opportunity has not only improved my financial situation but also boosted my self-esteem. I am grateful to Utkal Alumina for providing us with the necessary skills to pursue a fulfilling career in driving.”

Promod Bhag from Girligumma Village in Jasmantpur block of Koraput district too expressed his gratitude, saying, “Utkal Alumina’s driving skill development program has been a game-changer for me. Before that, I was unemployed. I am now working as a professional driver. This opportunity has given me a sense of independence and financial stability.”

All of UAIL’s projects are carried out under the aegis of the Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development, chaired by Rajashree Birla.  UAIL’s engagement extends to 232 villages under 25 gram panchayats of Odisha. UAIL enriches the lives of more than 2,01,000 people through its 5 pillars of interventions: education, healthcare, sustainable livelihood, rural infrastructure and addressing the issues of their socio-economic concern in line with UNSDGs.
