NEW DELHI, JANUARY 30, 2026
In a move that underscores the government’s emphasis
on participatory governance and future-ready policymaking, Union Minister for
Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman will engage with young minds
from across the country following the presentation of the Union Budget 2026–27.
Around 30 college students, representing diverse regions and academic
backgrounds, will be part of this unique initiative that blends fiscal policy
with first-hand democratic experience.
As part of the programme, the students will witness
the live presentation of the Union Budget from the Lok Sabha Gallery on
February 1, 2026, giving them a rare opportunity to observe one of the most
consequential parliamentary proceedings shaping India’s economic direction. The
exposure is designed to offer a deeper understanding of how national financial
priorities are debated, articulated, and placed before Parliament.
The selected students hail from a wide spectrum of
disciplines, including commerce, economics, medical education, and vocational
studies, reflecting the government’s intent to engage youth beyond conventional
economic streams. Their journey will also include a visit to the Ministry of
Finance at Kartavya Bhawan-1, where they will interact with senior officials to
gain insights into policy formulation, institutional functioning, and the role
of governance in nation-building.
Later in the evening, Sitharaman will hold an
interactive session with the students in a free-wheeling discussion focused on
the key priorities of the Union Budget 2026–27, its long-term vision for
India’s growth, and its implications for the country’s youth. The interaction
will also provide a platform for students to share their ideas, aspirations,
and perspectives on national development, reinforcing the two-way dialogue
between policymakers and the next generation.
The initiative aims to promote greater awareness and
understanding of finance, economics, governance, and democratic processes among
young citizens, while encouraging informed and constructive participation in
India’s financial and parliamentary systems. Significantly, the engagement
builds on the consultative approach adopted during the Budget preparation
process, during which inputs were sought from citizens, including youth, through
multiple platforms — many of which are expected to find reflection in the Union
Budget 2026–27.
