Reliance Industries' digital arm Jio Platforms is exploring a major global expansion, with Managing Director Akash Ambani indicating that the company could build around 12 strategic partnerships to potentially extend its technology reach to as many as 1.5 billion additional users.

Speaking to brokers from across India gathered in Mumbai ahead of the proposed Jio IPO, Ambani identified the US and Germany among the developed markets offering opportunities for Jio's technology, alongside East Asia, South America and Africa.

The remarks offer a clearer indication yet of the potential scale of Jio's international ambitions, with the company looking to take technology developed and proven at scale in India to markets across the world.

Rather than entering every overseas market as a telecom operator, Jio plans to explore partnerships with local operators, enabling them to deploy its proprietary technology stack. The approach could allow the company to expand its international footprint without having to replicate its entire domestic operating model in each market.

Home broadband is emerging as a key opportunity. Ambani indicated that even developed economies such as the US and Germany could offer scope for Jio's broadband technology, given that fibre rollout has lagged in parts of these markets.

Jio believes its integrated home broadband technology stack, along with other components of its in-house technology platform, could address diverse requirements across international markets. The proposed partnerships would provide a route to taking these capabilities to a substantially larger global user base.

Ambani emphasised that developing technology and scaling it successfully are two distinct capabilities, suggesting that Jio's experience in building and deploying technology at scale in India could be a competitive advantage as it explores overseas opportunities.

The strategy also carries wider implications for India's technology sector. While India has traditionally been a major market for global technology companies, Jio is seeking to position the country as a source of technology that can be exported to international markets.

Ambani has previously highlighted the potential of Jio's proprietary, end-to-end technology stack to help India transition from being a technology importer to an exporter. The latest comments suggest that strategic partnerships could be central to translating that ambition into a global business.

The potential reach of 1.5 billion additional users would represent a significant addressable opportunity, although the number is contingent on partnerships being established and does not represent an existing customer base or committed user addition

If realised, the expansion could open up a new international revenue stream for Jio Platforms and strengthen its position as a technology provider beyond India. It would also signal a broader shift in India's digital economy, with home-grown technology being developed, scaled domestically and taken to global markets.
