MUMBAI, OCTOBER 17, 2026

Mumbai Indians on Saturday announced that Mahela Jayawardene will step down as head coach, bringing the curtains down on a decade-long association with the five-time Indian Premier League champions.

The Sri Lankan batting great, who served two stints as head coach from 2017 to 2022 and again from 2024 to 2026, guided Mumbai Indians to three IPL titles and played a pivotal role in shaping the franchise's winning culture, built around discipline, collaboration and a team-first approach.

Jayawardene's departure marks the end of a significant chapter in the franchise's history, with his influence extending beyond the senior men's team to the wider Mumbai Indians global cricketing network.

In 2022, Jayawardene took over as Global Head of Performance, overseeing the franchise's expansion across international leagues and working closely with coaching groups to establish a common cricketing philosophy across the MI family.

During his tenure in the wider role, Mumbai Indians Women, MI New York and MI Emirates each clinched a title, further strengthening the franchise's growing presence in global cricket.

Mumbai Indians owner Nita M Ambani lauded Jayawardene's contribution, describing his leadership, integrity and passion for the game as invaluable to the franchise.

"Mahela has made a significant contribution to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us," Ambani said in a statement.

On behalf of the MI family, she thanked the former Sri Lankan captain for his commitment and said he would always remain a part of the franchise's extended family.

"Mahela will always be a part of our #OneFamily, and we wish him every happiness and success in the journey ahead," she added.

Jayawardene, meanwhile, expressed pride in his association with the franchise and thanked Ambani and Akash Ambani for their continued trust and support.

"Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for over a decade now. The players, coaching team, the incredible support of the #OneFamily and above all the fans have made this an experience I will always treasure," he said.

Reflecting on the journey, Jayawardene said the franchise had shared unforgettable moments, overcome challenges and built something to be proud of.

"I leave with immense pride in what we have achieved together and will always carry a special place in my heart for MI. I wish the team every success in the years ahead," he added.

Jayawardene, one of Sri Lanka's most accomplished former captains and a celebrated figure in international cricket, was instrumental in building continuity and a strong team environment at Mumbai Indians during his two spells as head coach.

His association with the franchise also coincided with the expansion of the MI brand into multiple T20 leagues, with the success of its women's and overseas teams underlining the broader impact of the shared cricketing philosophy.
