“Journalism must not ignore challenges, but it must equally highlight progress and nation-building efforts,” the Vice President of India, C. P. Radhakrishnan, said while addressing the 57th Convocation Ceremony of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Deemed to be University, held at its New Delhi campus. Urging graduates to uphold accuracy, fairness, integrity and accountability, he noted that communicators shape aspirations, amplify national priorities and craft narratives that inspire progress. He emphasized that creativity is not merely a commercial tool, but a catalyst for transformation and social change, and called upon young professionals to practise purpose-driven communication to help build a confident and inclusive India.

The ceremony marked a historic milestone as the first convocation of a graduating batch after IIMC attained deemed-to-be-university status in January 2024. On the occasion, the Vice President also laid the foundation stone for a new academic block, signalling a major expansion of the institute’s infrastructure and academic capacity.

Addressing the gathering, Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Electronics & IT and Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, described IIMC as one of India’s premier institutions with a high placement rate and graduates widely sought after in the media industry. He announced that from the next academic session, IIMC will introduce a Fellowship Programme for journalists to enable specialization in areas such as technology, economy and strategy, thereby strengthening research and domain expertise. Highlighting the establishment of an incubator at the institute, he appreciated innovative startups, including one that is transforming Indian folk tales into technology-driven storytelling formats, and underscored the pivotal role of Gen Bharat in shaping the country’s future trajectory.

A total of 509 students from nine postgraduate diploma programmes across six campuses were awarded diplomas at the ceremony. Thirty-five medals, including 23 carrying cash prizes, were presented to toppers in recognition of academic excellence. Mark sheets under the grade and credit system have been made available through DigiLocker, reflecting the institute’s move towards digital academic governance.

IIMC currently offers eight postgraduate diploma programmes along with several MA courses, and is set to expand its academic portfolio further with the introduction of three new MA programmes from the 2026–27 academic session, reinforcing its position as a leading national centre for media and communication education.
