Reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and ecological conservation, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has undertaken an extensive green initiative at its Jharsuguda operations, planting approximately 2,000 saplings across multiple locations to mark World Ecology Day. Bringing together employees, business partners and local communities, the initiative combined large-scale plantation activities with environmental awareness sessions, underscoring the importance of collective responsibility in protecting natural ecosystems and fostering a greener, more sustainable future for the region.

Observed annually on November 1, World Ecology Day highlights the importance of preserving ecological balance and nurturing a harmonious relationship between people and nature. Its underlying principles resonate with the United Nations’ Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030), which calls for concerted global action to prevent, halt and reverse ecosystem degradation. Reflecting this shared vision, Vedanta Aluminium’s Jharsuguda unit organised a series of plantation and awareness activities to strengthen environmental consciousness and encourage greater participation in biodiversity conservation among employees, community members and other local stakeholders.

C. Chandru, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, Jharsuguda, said, “Environmental stewardship is integral to the way we operate, encompassing everything from enhancing resource efficiency and adopting cleaner technologies to supporting biodiversity conservation. Sustainability-focused initiatives, such as this extensive plantation drive, reaffirm our commitment to responsible manufacturing and our endeavour to create enduring value for the communities around us. We believe that meaningful environmental progress requires collective participation, and such initiatives play an important role in building a greener and more sustainable future.”

The World Ecology Day observance also featured comprehensive environmental awareness sessions conducted by experts from Vedanta Aluminium for employees and business partners. The sessions focused on maintaining ecological balance, understanding the importance of biodiversity and embracing environmentally responsible practices in everyday life. By combining on-ground plantation activities with knowledge-sharing and awareness-building initiatives, the programme sought to foster a deeper understanding of environmental challenges and inspire sustained action towards ecological conservation. The initiative further builds on Vedanta Aluminium’s broader biodiversity conservation and sustainability efforts, contributing to the enhancement of green cover and the preservation of local ecosystems across the region.

Sharing his experience, Sankar Samanta, an employee of WICL, a business partner of the company, said, “The awareness session gave me a new perspective on how even small actions can make a significant difference to the environment. I was encouraged to learn more about biodiversity conservation and sustainable practices, and I feel motivated to incorporate some of these habits into my everyday life. It is heartening to see the company taking such initiatives and creating opportunities for employees and the wider community to understand and contribute to environmental protection.”

Beyond its community-focused environmental initiatives, Vedanta Aluminium’s Jharsuguda operations continue to pursue a multi-pronged approach towards sustainable manufacturing, integrating technology-driven solutions and resource-efficient practices into its operational framework. These efforts include the deployment of digital monitoring systems to ensure comprehensive water management and advanced Internet of Things (IoT)-based digital sensors for continuous monitoring of stack emissions, supporting greater operational efficiency and environmental oversight. As of FY26, the unit also operates a fleet of 116 electric forklifts, helping reduce annual diesel consumption by approximately 16.3 lakh litres and carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by around 4,450 tonnes within its core plant operations.

Through sustained investments in cleaner technologies, biodiversity conservation, resource optimisation and community engagement, Vedanta Aluminium’s Jharsuguda operations continue to advance their environmental sustainability agenda. The World Ecology Day initiative further reflects the company's commitment to integrating responsible manufacturing with meaningful environmental action, while encouraging employees, business partners and local communities to become active participants in safeguarding the region's natural heritage and ecological wellbeing.
