Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer and the country’s leading billet manufacturer, has significantly expanded its billet production capacity at its Jharsuguda operations in Odisha — the world’s largest aluminium plant — taking the total capacity to 830 KTPA. With this expansion, Jharsuguda now ranks among the largest aluminium billet manufacturing operations globally. The strategic scale-up strengthens Vedanta Aluminium’s ability to consistently supply high-quality products to customers worldwide, widens its value-added product (VAP) portfolio, and further reinforces its pivotal role in supporting India’s rapidly growing extrusion and downstream industries.
Vedanta Aluminium’s
billets, available in diameters ranging from 5 to 12 inches, are critical
semi-finished products used in extrusion processes to create
precision-engineered profiles. These profiles cater to a wide spectrum of key
industries, including infrastructure, transportation, renewable energy,
electrical systems, consumer goods, and packaging. With aluminium offering an
exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, high recyclability, and design
versatility, billets play an increasingly vital role in advancing sustainable
manufacturing practices and enabling modern, efficient design solutions across
sectors.
The latest expansion
adds 250 KTPA of new capacity to the existing 580 KTPA billet infrastructure,
bringing the total to 830 KTPA. This development not only positions Jharsuguda
among the largest aluminium billet production sites worldwide but also
reinforces Vedanta Aluminium’s leadership in the Indian market, where the
company already meets over half of the country’s domestic billet demand. The
billet facility is equipped with state-of-the-art casting and homogenizing
technologies sourced from global leaders Wagstaff (USA) and Hertwich (Austria),
ensuring superior product quality and operational efficiency.
In addition to billet
expansion, Vedanta Aluminium has commissioned a new 120 KTPA Primary Foundry
Alloy (PFA) facility at the Jharsuguda site, further enhancing its PFA
production capabilities and expanding its value-added offerings.
Commenting on the
milestone, Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “Vedanta Aluminium is
committed to building a globally competitive and self-reliant aluminium
manufacturing base for India. The accelerated expansion at our Jharsuguda
operations marks a crucial step toward achieving this vision. This scale-up
enhances our ability to serve high-growth industries and strengthens India’s
position as an emerging force in the global aluminium landscape. We remain
focused on creating long-term value for the nation and all our stakeholders.”
Echoing the
sentiment, C Chandru, CEO, Vedanta Jharsuguda, said, “This expansion reflects
our strong focus on rapidly scaling value-added aluminium production while
maintaining technical excellence and strict adherence to global standards. The
exceptional execution by our teams has been instrumental in achieving this
milestone, which further cements Jharsuguda’s status as a world-class aluminium
manufacturing hub.”
Notably, Vedanta
Aluminium is India’s largest manufacturer and supplier of premium-grade
aluminium billets for the global extrusion industry and the first producer in
the country to offer low-carbon aluminium under its Restora range. Serving
customers across more than 60 countries, the company offers over 25
high-quality billet variants and aims to further expand its total billet
capacity to 1.25 MTPA across its operations in Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Its
Jharsuguda plant also holds the distinction of being India’s first primary
aluminium smelter to receive certifications from both the Bureau of Indian
Standards and the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, underscoring its commitment
to quality, sustainability, and responsible production.
