NEW DELHI, JULY 6, 2026

Riding on strong consumer demand, improving supplies and growing acceptance of electric and alternative-fuel vehicles, India's automobile retail market registered its best-ever June performance in 2026, with total vehicle registrations crossing 25.57 lakh units. The robust performance reflects sustained momentum across both urban and rural markets despite the delayed onset of the southwest monsoon.

According to vehicle retail data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on Monday, overall vehicle retail sales stood at 25,57,234 units in June 2026, registering a 21.83 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth and a 1.03 per cent month-on-month (MoM) increase. Passenger Vehicles (PVs) and tractors emerged as the fastest-growing segments, while overall electric vehicle (EV) retail sales touched an all-time monthly high.

Reflecting on the June performance, FADA President C S Vigneshwar said, “June’26 has been a landmark month for Indian Auto Retail — the best June ever recorded, with Two-Wheelers, Three-Wheelers, Commercial Vehicles, Passenger Vehicles and overall registrations each posting their highest-ever June figures. The industry retailed 25,57,234 units, a robust 21.83 per cent YoY growth and a 1.03 per cent rise over May, with PV at +28.63 per cent and Tractors at +25.31 per cent leading, followed by 2W at +21.22 per cent, CV at +16.88 per cent and 3W at +16.20 per cent, while Wheeled Construction Equipment declined 40.94 per cent on a high base. Tractors recorded their second-best June ever. That such records have come in a seasonally transitional month underscores the structural depth of the India Growth Story and the widening aspirations of Bharat.”

Two-Wheeler retail sales reached 18,28,458 units, marking a 21.22 per cent YoY increase, making it the best June on record for the segment. While sales were marginally lower by 0.89 per cent compared to May, FADA attributed the sequential decline entirely to rural markets.

Urban two-wheeler sales grew 4.25 per cent MoM, whereas rural sales declined 4.55 per cent due to the delayed and uneven southwest monsoon, prompting rain-fed markets to adopt a cautious approach. Dealers, however, reported healthy entry-level demand, improved vehicle supplies following the West Asia ceasefire and a significant shift towards electric mobility.

A notable milestone was the electric vehicle penetration in the two-wheeler segment, which crossed 10 per cent for the first time, rising to 10.60 per cent from 7.34 per cent in June last year.

Passenger Vehicle retail sales emerged as the standout performer, climbing 28.63 per cent YoY and 2.05 per cent MoM to reach 4,10,853 units, the highest-ever June sales for the segment.

FADA noted that rural demand continued to outpace urban markets on an annual basis, with rural PV sales growing 35.09 per cent compared to 24.67 per cent in urban areas. However, on a monthly basis, rural sales remained largely flat, reflecting the temporary impact of delayed monsoon activity.

The month also witnessed a historic shift towards cleaner mobility. Alternative-fuel Passenger Vehicles — including CNG, Hybrid and EV models — accounted for 40.35 per cent of all PV retail sales for the first time. This included 24.33 per cent CNG, 8.27 per cent Hybrid and 7.75 per cent EVs, with EV retail sales touching an all-time high of 31,823 units.

FADA, however, expressed concern over rising passenger vehicle inventory levels, which increased to 32–34 days, exceeding its recommended benchmark of 21 days. The association urged vehicle manufacturers to align wholesale dispatches with actual retail demand during the monsoon period to prevent dealers' working capital from being locked in unsold inventory.

Commercial Vehicle (CV) retail sales also achieved their highest-ever June tally, rising 16.88 per cent YoY to 90,972 units. Rural markets outperformed urban regions, recording 21.63 per cent growth compared to 12.75 per cent in cities, indicating broadening freight demand beyond metropolitan areas.

Within the segment, Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) grew 21.10 per cent, Medium Commercial Vehicles (MCVs) rose 16.81 per cent, while Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCVs) increased 8.26 per cent.

Dealers attributed the healthy performance to sustained freight movement, growing e-commerce logistics, infrastructure activity and improved vehicle availability. Electric Commercial Vehicle penetration also reached a record 3.53 per cent, more than doubling from 1.57 per cent a year earlier.

Three-Wheeler retail sales stood at 1,20,889 units, registering a 16.20 per cent YoY increase and setting another June record. The segment continued its rapid transition towards electric mobility, with EVs accounting for 64.08 per cent of total three-wheeler sales.

Tractor sales recorded 1,00,818 units, rising 25.31 per cent YoY and 21.33 per cent MoM, driven by pre-Kharif agricultural activity. It marked the second-highest June performance in the segment's history.

Across all vehicle categories, total EV retail sales surged to 3,06,220 units, the highest monthly figure ever recorded, taking overall EV penetration to around 12.5 per cent.

Looking ahead to July 2026, FADA said dealer sentiment remains encouraging despite uncertainties surrounding the progress of the monsoon. As many as 51.24 per cent of dealers expect sales growth during the month, 41.79 per cent anticipate stable demand, while only 6.97 per cent foresee a decline.

The association expects rural demand to strengthen as monsoon rainfall improves and Kharif sowing gathers pace. Passenger Vehicles are likely to remain supported by healthy bookings, especially for EVs and CNG models, along with new product launches. Commercial Vehicles are expected to benefit from steady freight movement and infrastructure activity.

FADA noted that the pace of the monsoon, absorption of recent price hikes and vehicle financing turnaround times will remain the key factors influencing July retail demand.

For the July-September quarter, dealer confidence has strengthened considerably. According to the survey, 66.17 per cent of dealers expect business growth over the next three months, while only 3.98 per cent anticipate a decline.

Additionally, 38.31 per cent of dealers have revised their FY27 retail outlook upwards, compared to 16.42 per cent who lowered expectations, reflecting confidence that the record first quarter of FY27, which registered 15.35 per cent YoY growth, will extend into the festive season.

FADA expects Two-Wheelers to benefit from improved rural incomes following Kharif sowing, Passenger Vehicles to receive a boost from festive demand beginning with Ganesh Chaturthi and Onam in September, and Commercial Vehicles to continue gaining from sustained infrastructure and logistics activity.

The association, however, cautioned that deficient monsoon rainfall or any El Niño-related disruption could weigh on rural demand, while additional price hikes and inventory accumulation remain key risks. Nevertheless, it maintained that easing geopolitical tensions, softer fuel prices and policy continuity provide a supportive environment for the automobile industry as it heads into the festive quarter.
