Registrations open till July 20; Grand Finale at IIT Delhi on August 1 as Ministry of Textiles invites innovators to transform the handloom sector

NEW DELHI, JULY 8, 2026

In a major push to integrate technology, design and entrepreneurship with India's rich handloom heritage, the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, has launched Handloom Hackathon 2026 – "Weaving Innovation", a nationwide innovation challenge aimed at developing technology-driven and sustainable solutions for the handloom sector.

Organised as part of the National Handloom Day 2026 celebrations, the Hackathon seeks to bring together students, weavers, artisans, designers, technologists, startups, entrepreneurs, researchers and innovators to address critical challenges facing the sector through practical and scalable solutions.

The Grand Finale will be held on August 1, 2026, at the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), IIT Delhi, where shortlisted teams will showcase their ideas before a distinguished jury comprising experts from academia, industry, design, technology and the handloom ecosystem.

Speaking on the initiative, Dr. M. Beena, Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, said: "The Handloom Hackathon 2026 seeks to bring together the creativity of India’s youth with the rich heritage of the handloom sector. By providing a collaborative platform for weavers, students, designers, technologists, entrepreneurs and innovators, the initiative aims to generate practical and scalable solutions that address key challenges, enhance competitiveness and contribute to the sustainable growth of the handloom sector."

The Hackathon will encourage participants to develop innovative solutions across diverse thematic areas, including product and design innovation, sustainability and circularity, digital technologies, market access, branding, supply chain efficiency, productivity enhancement, business development and social impact. It also aims to strengthen collaboration between India's traditional handloom ecosystem and its growing innovation and startup landscape through interdisciplinary problem-solving.

Participation is open to students pursuing higher education in textiles, fashion, design, engineering, management and technology, along with handloom weavers, artisans, researchers, startups, entrepreneurs, innovators and professionals from across the country.

Beyond recognising exceptional ideas, the initiative seeks to identify promising solutions that can be mentored, incubated and further developed in collaboration with partner institutions, wherever feasible, to support the long-term modernisation, competitiveness and sustainability of India's handloom sector.

Online registrations are open until July 20, 2026, and eligible participants can submit their ideas through www.youthideathon.in/handloom.
