In a major boost to India's agricultural and marine export sectors, the country has secured continued access to the lucrative European Union (EU) market for aquaculture products, honey, eggs, and animal casings beyond September 2026. The development comes after the EU included India in its list of authorised countries under its revised regulatory framework aimed at addressing global concerns over Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

The European Commission has amended Regulation (EU) 2021/405 through Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1189, introducing additional compliance requirements for nations exporting specified animal-origin products to the EU. The revised regulation will take effect from September 2026.

India's inclusion in the updated list of approved exporting countries ensures uninterrupted access for its exporters to one of the world's most significant markets. The decision is particularly important for India's fisheries sector, with fish and fishery product exports to the EU currently valued at approximately USD 1.59 billion annually.

The achievement reflects sustained diplomatic and regulatory efforts led by the Department of Commerce under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Working closely with the Export Inspection Council (EIC) and other stakeholders, the department has actively engaged with the European Commission to address evolving regulatory requirements and safeguard India's export interests.

The EIC has played a pivotal role by strengthening India's official control system through enhanced inspection, testing, and certification mechanisms aligned with stringent EU standards. These measures have reinforced confidence in India's food safety and quality assurance systems, enabling the country to meet the bloc's evolving import requirements.

Going forward, the Department of Commerce, the Export Inspection Council, and key stakeholders, including the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), will continue collaborating with EU-approved establishments and regulatory authorities to ensure seamless implementation of the new norms and maintain the highest standards of quality and food safety.

The continued market access is expected to provide significant relief and growth opportunities for Indian exporters across the aquaculture, fisheries, honey, egg, and animal casing sectors. It is also likely to strengthen India's position in global agri-food trade while creating new avenues for export expansion.

The development underscores the Government of India's commitment to promoting exports, enhancing institutional capacities, and deepening economic engagement with major trading partners such as the European Union. As global trade regulations become increasingly stringent, India's successful compliance with the amended EU framework highlights the country's growing reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality agricultural and marine products to international markets.
